I&#8217;m here to advance their living.&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">University is about the students. Their education, their discoveries, their experiences. Students&#8217; Union Elected Officers champion their voices.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After weeks of posters plastering the Cardiff University campus, the votes have been counted and the 2018-2019 Elected Officers have been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiffstudents.com\/elections\/results\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">announced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. We spoke with three of the 17 officers to get a sense of their goals. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Students\u2019 Union President<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> elect is Fadhila Al Dhahouri, who will be the first Muslim student ever to hold the role at Cardiff University. Three years into studying genetics on a full scholarship, she realised she could help a larger number of people through law and politics.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Al Dhahouri said, \u201cI want to give my best, and benefit people that are in Cardiff, because they are the people who made me who I am.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Vice President Postgraduate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> will be Jake Smith, returning for his second term. \u201cWhat initially drew me to the position was I was a Cardiff undergraduate, so I did my undergrad degree here, and then of course I became a Cardiff postgrad master&#8217;s student,\u201d Smith said. \u201cI think in many ways the transition from undergraduate study to postgraduate study. There\u2019s a lot that could be improved in Cardiff. And I thought, having seen both sides of the coin, hopefully I\u2019d do a good job in trying to fix that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Mental Health Officer <\/b>will be filled by Orla Tarn.<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0\u201cWhen they introduced the Mental Health Officer last year I was so excited. I knew I wanted to go for it,\u201d said Tarn, who\u2019s previously worked with mental-health related societies. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I also have my own past experience with mental health for quite a long time. So I just thought it was the role kind of built for me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As both Smith and Al Dhahouri are returning officials, they feel their experiences will be invaluable. Smith said,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThings take quite a long time to achieve in the university. So I&#8217;m looking forward to actually seeing them through to completion. Holding the university to account, to make sure that they actually fulfill the promises that they made.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31464\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31464\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-31464 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/Orla-Recovered-625x352.png\" alt=\"Orla Tarn Mental Health Officer Cardiff University\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31464\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-31464 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/Orla-Recovered-625x352.png\" alt=\"Orla Tarn Mental Health Officer Cardiff University\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><\/noscript> Orla Tarn, upcoming Mental Health Officer said, &#8220;Any support that you think you need, the SU is available.&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A newcomer in a new role, Tarn is hoping to use her organisational skills to begin building a safety net.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0She wants to improve training for personal tutors so they\u2019re better equipped to spot and respond to mental illness. Peer support could be furthered <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">strengthened by creating more networks for specific issues, such as the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.studentminds.org.uk\/eatingdifficulties.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Eating Difficulties<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> group run by Student Minds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tarn\u2019s primary aim is creating a clear extenuating circumstances policy for mental health.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThey are existent in some schools, but in other schools they\u2019re not. It\u2019s just not very consistent and students don\u2019t know where to go,\u201d said Tarn. \u201cIt impacts me every exam season. It impacts my friends. It impacts so many people that I know.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Exam and coursework pressure can be lessened by improving the university&#8217;s study spaces.\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">S<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">mith has spent this past term successfully campaigning to increasing the opening hours for the ASSL library. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I\u2019d like to see that happen in more study spaces and more libraries all over campus. Especially looking at longer evening, weekend, and holiday times as well.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31463\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31463\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-31463 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/Feedback-Recovered-625x351.png\" alt=\"Cardiff University library feedback board. \" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31463\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-31463 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/Feedback-Recovered-625x351.png\" alt=\"Cardiff University library feedback board. \" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" \/><\/noscript> Libraries across campus are collecting sticky-note feedback such as &#8216;quiet pods&#8217; and &#8216;more eJournals&#8217;.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">More affordable printing is another goal. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI want to lobby for free printing for literally everything,\u201d said Al Dhahouri. \u201cBut with guidelines, so that that way we cannot be harming our environment by cutting more trees. For example, I really want to focus on recycled paper, like we use in the student union.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Another green goal is establishing rooftop garden, creating a natural space.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0Al Dhahouri said, \u201cStudents got very excited for that when I was campaigning.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Finances are one of the most pressing concerns for students. The Elected Officers have ideas to help them save money.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI want to reduce the catering costs across the campus,\u201d said Al Dhahouri. She aims to bring in cheaper eating options, particularly for vegetarians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Al Dhahouri will also be working towards increased tuition fee transparency. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0\u201cI want to see if that money is actually going back to the student experience, or is it going somewhere else that&#8217;s not beneficial to them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cMy vision is more of an infographic: \u00a31, where is it spent?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31457\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31457\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-31457 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/Jake-Recovered-625x351.png\" alt=\"Jakle Smith VP postgraduate Student Union voting\" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31457\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-31457 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/Jake-Recovered-625x351.png\" alt=\"Jakle Smith VP postgraduate Student Union voting\" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" \/><\/noscript> VP Postgraduate Jake Smith, collecting feedback on how to handle issue voting.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As VP for Postgraduates, Smith wants to make those studies accessible for a wider range of people. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I want to make postgraduate study more affordable for undergraduate students.
