However, it&#8217;s a town seeped in history and culture, hiding crumbling castles and magical mirrors. If you have just one day to explore, here&#8217;s the highlights you absolutely must catch.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Breakfast<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Start the day off right with breakfast&#8211; or brunch, if you fancy a bit of a lie in. One of my personal favourite restaurants is <\/span><b>Jackson and Rye<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. It features a nice, rustic atmosphere at reasonable prices. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On previous visits I\u2019ve enjoyed their warm, hearty soups, which unfortunately aren\u2019t available on weekends. This time I tucked into some delicious bacon and blueberry pancakes.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31970\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31970\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-31970 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/Blueberry-pancakes-625x352.png\" alt=\"Pancakes at the Jackson+Rye in Guildford. \" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31970\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-31970 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/Blueberry-pancakes-625x352.png\" alt=\"Pancakes at the Jackson+Rye in Guildford. \" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><\/noscript> My only complaint about these decadent pancakes was that a significant bit of the third one was overly crispy.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you\u2019re looking for something lighter, I would recommend either their chicken avocado salad or vegetarian breakfast, The Forager. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Mid Morning &#8211; Stroll Down High Street<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A long cobbled road is fenced by ancient buildings refurbished for the 21st Century. If shopping is your thing, you\u2019ll find plenty of modern brands accompanied by local, independent shops. Perfect if you\u2019re looking to treat yourself. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Personally, though, I\u2019m more of a history gal. Thankfully, that\u2019s something Guildford is rich in. The town\u2019s tourist information lives in a 17th century town house which is now home to a rotating art gallery. With free admission, it\u2019s absolutely worth a look. <\/span><b>The Medieval Undercroft <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">offers a look back into the past at a graceful underground vault which was once a merchant\u2019s storeroom.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31975\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31975\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-31975 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/mainstreet-625x351.png\" alt=\"Guildford highstreet photograph \" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31975\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-31975 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/mainstreet-625x351.png\" alt=\"Guildford highstreet photograph \" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" \/><\/noscript> Much of the Guildford High Street is formed out of centuries&#8217; old buildings refitted into modern retail shops.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The most distinctive feature of the street is its bright gold clock. It belongs to the <\/span><b>Guildford Guildhall<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a tudor building where court was once held. I found it a bit bare for the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a32 price tag, but at least the money is going to supporting its preservation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you\u2019re looking for a bit more direction, joining a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.guildfordwalks.org.uk\/home.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Guided Walk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. At a leisurely pace you\u2019ll get right to the good stuff and be able to delve deep into Guildford\u2019s past. Sadly I missed it this time, since they don\u2019t run in winter. From past experience, however, I certainly recommended if you visit between May and September. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Late morning &#8211; River Stroll<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A stroll along the river is a lovely way to finish off. Once the river would have been the city\u2019s lifeblood, creating quite the trading hub. With the birth of steam the town shrunk, but you can still see evidence of its past in the traditional lock system. Or instead of walking, maybe grab a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.guildfordboats.co.uk\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">boat-ride<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31976\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31976\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-31976 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/WhiteRabbit-625x351.png\" alt=\"Brass statue to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in Guildford. \" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31976\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-31976 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/WhiteRabbit-625x351.png\" alt=\"Brass statue to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in Guildford. \" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" \/><\/noscript> Written in 1865, Alice&#8217;s Adventures in Wonderland tells the story of the titular character who falls into a dreamlike world after chasing after a talking rabbit.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Personally, the highlight for me is the lovely statue you\u2019ll find by the main bridge, tucked under a blooming tree. A girl staring after a white (or brass) rabbit, vanishing into a hole. It\u2019s a tribute to <\/span><b>Alice in Wonderland<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and its writer Lewis Carroll, who was a landowner in Guildford and later buried there. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Lunch &#8211; Weekend Markets<\/b><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31969\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31969\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-31969 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/BakedGoods-625x352.png\" alt=\"Baked good in Guildford weekend market. \" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31969\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-31969 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/BakedGoods-625x352.png\" alt=\"Baked good in Guildford weekend market. \" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><\/noscript> Stalls like this should be made illegal for being too tempting.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are few things I enjoy more than an open air market. Maybe it\u2019s the festive atmosphere, but it always puts a bounce in my step. Fresh produce, vibrant flowers, scrumptious cakes, local jewellery\u2026 Why not snag lunch in the form of an authentic veggie samosa or a scrumptious slice of cake? <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Early afternoon &#8211; Guildford Castle<\/b><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31971\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31971\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-31971 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/CardiffCastle2-625x352.png\" alt=\"Guildford Castle in spring time. \" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31971\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-31971 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/CardiffCastle2-625x352.png\" alt=\"Guildford Castle in spring time. \" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><\/noscript> Equally magnificent as the castle are the carefully tended too gardens surrounding it.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Undoubtedly the visit\u2019s crown jewel. Perched atop a hill is the crumbling ruins of a castle built almost 1000 years ago. Once battles would have been fought over it. Now only its original main tower remains, its outer walls barely standing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Climbing that tower will cost you <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a34. Worth it for history lovers, but otherwise, the view from the tower\u2019s base is still gorgeous. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The contrast between the worn stones and the tidy gardens is strange. Wandering through the grounds, I was struck thinking our ancestors across history walking these same paths. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Thinking about their lives was like peering through the looking glass. In fact, you can find a statue to just that tucked away in Alice\u2019s Garden. It feels immensely fitting. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Late afternoon &#8211; The People\u2019s Cathedral <\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you make the walk up Stag Hill, you\u2019ll find yourself at <\/span><b>Guildford Cathedral<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, topped by a golden angel. Compared to the town\u2019s other sites, it\u2019s positively modern.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31972\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31972\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-31972 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/CathederalClose-625x352.png\" alt=\"Interior of Guildford Cathedral. \" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31972\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-31972 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/CathederalClose-625x352.png\" alt=\"Interior of Guildford Cathedral. \" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><\/noscript> While we visited workers were setting up a stage inside the cathedral for 180 singers to perform there that night.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI have a real fondness for Canadians,\u201d said Mike, a volunteer who\u2019s face lit up when he found out where I was from. He was eager to share the cathedral\u2019s history, however short. \u201cIt was during the war. While the local troops served overseas, Canadian soldiers protected us. I grew up with them. Most of the lady chapel was built by them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">No matter who built it, the cathedral is beautiful. A somewhat dull, grey outside hides an airy, white space. There are dazzling stained glass windows and minimalist white glass statues. The baptistery, with its sapphire blue ceiling studded with stars, is particularly stunning. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Dinner &#8211; International or Local? <\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Without a doubt, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/thaiterrace.co.uk\/menu\"><b>The Thai Terrace<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> offers some of the most delicious curries outside of Thailand itself. Everything from the food to the decor is authentic, everything fresh and crisp.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you struggle with spice, there are some pubbier offerings. I\u2019d suggest either the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theweyside.co.uk\/menus\/dinner\"><b>Weyside Inn<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">or <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/marchhareguildford.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/03\/D46010_10_0318_White-Brasserie-A-La-Carte-Menu_WEB.pdf\"><b>The March Hare<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Evening &#8211; Catch a Show<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">London\u2019s West End may be the home of British theatre, but you can most certainly find gems farther afield. Often for far cheaper, too.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31973\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31973\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-31973 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/CatsCredit-625x352.png\" alt=\"Cats performed by GSA in Guildford. \" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31973\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-31973 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/CatsCredit-625x352.png\" alt=\"Cats performed by GSA in Guildford. \" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><\/noscript> Being home to one of the leading conservatories in Britain, Guildford School of Acting, supplies the town with many high quality stage productions. Photo credit to Robert Workman.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I caught a performance of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cats<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> at the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.yvonne-arnaud.co.uk\/whats-on\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yvone Arnud Theatre<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The spectacular singing sent literal goosebumps all down my arms. With more humanised costumes, it was a fun twist on the classic musical which thoroughly earned its standing ovation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Unfortunately that the show\u2019s final performance. Thankfully, there are plenty of other performances to catch. The next couple of months features <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.yvonne-arnaud.co.uk\/production\/taken-at-midnight\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Taken By Midnight<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a tale of rebellion in Nazi Germany and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.yvonne-arnaud.co.uk\/production\/the-kite-runner\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Kite Runner<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a coming of age story set in Afghanistan. Guildford also hosts arts and music festivals throughout the year. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Night &#8211; Enjoy a Nightcap<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It was St. Patrick\u2019s Day, so grabbing a drink was practically obligatory. Just down the road from the theatre was <\/span><b>The Britannia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Very much your standard pub, but what makes it stand out are two piles of blankets:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0one labelled \u2018For Humans\u2019, one \u2018For Dogs\u2019. Getting to pet a friendly black lab immediately improves any pint.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Exhausted from a busy day, it wasn\u2019t long before I left. Outside, the night was oddly quiet. Snow was falling from the sky, blanketing the ground and deadening all sound. A fox darted across the street.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That eerie feeling stuck with me as I fell asleep, and will for much longer. Guildford is a beautiful town, overflowing with nature and history. An excellent destination for a relaxing day out.
