This means that rather than beginning to repay your student loan when you earn over \u00a321,000 a year, as it was before, you now won\u2019t have to repay your loan until on an yearly income of \u00a325,000 or more. The government also said they will not be putting up tuition fees (again) at the moment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This positive publicity is much needed but no surprise, given that the Student Loans Company (the body which organises loans and funding for UK students) has hired a private market research company.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_32586\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32586\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-32586 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/04\/Student-Finance-Events-Timeline-2-625x228.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"228\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-32586\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-32586 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/04\/Student-Finance-Events-Timeline-2-625x228.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"228\" \/><\/noscript> <a href=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/04\/Student-Finance-Events-Timeline.pdf\">Timeline<\/a> of changes to student loans and financing. However, these are not feedback sessions, none of the information is being taken back to the Student Loans Company (SLC) in order to address any issues raised. This will reportedly be done through the government&#8217;s own review, not with the voices of students in these sessions.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Instead, these groups are to find out how they can \u201cput a positive spin\u201d on any negative issues brought up during the sessions. This is a direct quote stated twice by the leader of the market group, in which participants were told they could not attend if they had family links to any journalists (or SLC members). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Here\u2019s what they would rather everyone forgot about\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The government sold off student debt to private companies<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In what is essentially a move towards <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/student\/news\/student-loans-sales-debt-private-companies-treasury-graduates-12bn-a7565716.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">privatisation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the UK government has been selling the debt of students who took out loans before 2012 (for now) to private companies. This change affected agreements which had already been signed as legal agreements. Many students believe this only happens once they graduate or perhaps that they would only be asked to return the amount they borrowed. In fact, this additional interest has been increasing your student debt from the moment you first received your loan. Which is true. However, it is important to remember that \u2018loan\u2019 really refers to \u2018debt\u2019 &#8211; i.e. the original amount you borrowed PLUS the interest which is being added on every year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Depending how much you earn, you may pay back less than you borrowed. After three decades this could amount to more than double what you originally borrowed but you still would not have paid off your debt due to the interest rates. (Exact figures available<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.studentloanrepayment.co.uk\/portal\/page?_pageid=93,6678784&amp;_dad=portal&amp;_schema=PORTAL\">here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Here is a table with some of the most interesting figures from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.moneysavingexpert.com\/students\/student-loans-tuition-fees-changes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Martin Lewis\u2019 Money Saving Expert website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. This shows the estimated debt repayments based on different projected earnings (in this sample from \u00a325,000 and above). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This is based on someone who has borrowed <\/span>\u00a342,600. <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The significant column is highlighted in red, which shows how some people could be paying back significantly more than they originally borrowed. They are there to protect consumers and businesses and the ensure the industry is fair. However, the Student Loans Company is not regulated by the FCA. This means they are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/money\/2017\/aug\/05\/student-loan-company-finance-complaints-debt\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">only answerable<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to the government, so there is no other organisation to go to if something needs challenging or there are changes to student contracts again.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>HOWEVER\u2026<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are, however, lots of good things about student loans. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Other countries like the United States have a much <a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/money\/4712609\/colleges-unaffordable\/\">less affordable system<\/a> (although other countries also educate people for free). <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many individuals who would not be able to go to university without these loans are able to access higher education away from home. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you are not a high-earner as on the earlier table, you could of course pay back less than you originally borrowed (a little bitter-sweet, however, if you went to university to educate yourself for a high-paid job).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_32444\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32444\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-32444 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/04\/GRADUATES-625x351.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-32444\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-32444 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/04\/GRADUATES-625x351.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" \/><\/noscript> Photo credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/photos\/RIcMwDLk1wo\">Caleb Woods<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ultimately, what is needed is transparency. Students enter into a financial agreement that they often do not understand. They have a loan shrouded in confusing statistics and the same re-churned statements from a government who have nobody else to answer to.
