Aside from the residential areas, attractions of this area include the busy city centre, the Principality Stadium, Bute Park, Cardiff Castle, and the National Museum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Like any suburban area, there are things that need to change.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We took to the streets of Cardiff and asked people which issues in Cathays matter the most.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Astrid den Hartog, Director of View properties:<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-35235\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/11\/Sam_VoxPop2-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-35235\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/11\/Sam_VoxPop2-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Rubbish. That\u2019s the main problem around here. I don\u2019t know how many times we\u2019ve opened and there\u2019s ben half a bottle of vodka lying on the windowsill. It\u2019s disgusting. You kind of think to yourself \u2018oh for God\u2019s sake these bloody students.\u2019 And then you realise \u2018I was like that when I was younger.\u2019 There are so many fast food places they should have bins outside. It\u2019s not the students\u2019 fault, if there were bins people would use them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>Norma Mackie, Cathays Councillor for Labour:<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-35238\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/11\/Sam_VoxPop3-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-35238\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/11\/Sam_VoxPop3-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s trying to get that mix of right of residents and students. Cathays was a family-oriented community. Now you only have one or two families in a street and the rest are students. The majority of students are fine but some don\u2019t understand the consequences of things like taking up residences\u2019 parking. We had an 83 year old who had to walk home from streets away. She had a really nasty fall because she\u2019d had to walk too far. It\u2019s things like that. All students see the residents being angry, if they join in they\u2019ll see them in a different light because they\u2019ll see them enjoying themselves.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Florence Davis, 19, student:<\/strong> <\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-35230\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/11\/Florence-final-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-35230\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/11\/Florence-final-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;It\u2019s quite dirty and unclean. There\u2019s a lot of littering around. That\u2019s one of the biggest issues. If I don\u2019t go out at night and if there\u2019s a student night, it does keep me up. The homeless people here as well, they\u2019re very different from where I come from. They come up to you and stuff here and ask for money, the homeless people where I come from mostly just keep to themselves.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Sangeeta, 22, student:<\/strong> <\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-35269\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/11\/Sangeeta-final-2-1-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-35269\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/11\/Sangeeta-final-2-1-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;When I come out in the night, I sometimes don\u2019t feel safe. Maybe it is because of the lights, they\u2019re quite dim in the evenings and the traffic on these small roads as well. I was walking through here (student union\/Sherman theatre street) last week and there were no signal lights or street lights and cars were just zooming past me and I couldn\u2019t cross the road.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Mark, 55:<\/strong> <\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-35232\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/11\/Mark-final-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-35232\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/11\/Mark-final-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;A lot of empty shops. Awful lot of empty shops. There\u2019s a lot of homeless people though. That\u2019s it really. I\u2019ve also seen a lot of bikers riding on the pavement. They\u2019re not doing anything about it. There\u2019s not enough being done. They\u2019re just sweeping it under the carpet instead of dealing with it. It\u2019s almost as if they don\u2019t want the homeless to be re-housed. We get complaints about people shouting and the music. I understand but that is Cathays! I received a letter from the council about our music being too loud. If the loud music won\u2019t be here, where should it be?
