But like any\u00a0neighbourhood, those who live and work in the ward have\u00a0experienced\u00a0changes over time, some\u00a0positive and some negative.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Bystanders, community\u00a0organisers, shop and charity workers alike, we went out with a simple question: What is the biggest issue in your experience of Riverside?<\/p>\n<p>The deprived section of the community was at the forefront of many minds as well as the environment, crowds, gardens and green spaces.<\/p>\n<h3>Lisa, 44, Social Farms and Gardens development worker<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-35375\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/11\/Food-Community-Centre-2-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"Food Community Centre Riverside\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-35375\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/11\/Food-Community-Centre-2-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"Food Community Centre Riverside\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW50818055\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW50818055\">&#8220;We are S<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW50818055\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW50818055\">ocial Farms &amp; Gardens, a charity that promotes community growing across the UK. A big part of that is helping health and wellbeing\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW50818055\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW50818055\">by\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW50818055\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW50818055\">reducing fly tipping, an initiative <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW50818055\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW50818055\">called \u2018Love Where You Live,&#8217; encourages community involvement coming together and making the planters look pretty in order to deter the fly tipping.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Kristen, 31, Social Farms and Gardens administrator<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-35370\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/11\/Food-Community-Centre-625x351.jpg\" alt=\"Food Community Centre Riverside\" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-35370\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/11\/Food-Community-Centre-625x351.jpg\" alt=\"Food Community Centre Riverside\" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW145834355\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW145834355\">&#8220;Anti-social<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW145834355\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW145834355\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW145834355\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW145834355\">behaviour<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW145834355\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW145834355\">\u00a0is not being tackled because\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW145834355\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW145834355\">there are<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW145834355\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW145834355\">\u00a0not enough resources within the police force. I&#8217;ve been in the same area where there was a crime committed, there was one community officer doing everything he could, but the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW145834355\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW145834355\">rise in the number of<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW145834355\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW145834355\">\u00a0petty things like windows being smashed and theft from stationery cars isn\u2019t being dealt with.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Allan, 67, volunteer at South Riverside Community Development Centre<\/h3>\n<h3><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-35365\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/11\/Allan--625x352.jpg\" alt=\"Allan Riverside\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-35365\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/11\/Allan--625x352.jpg\" alt=\"Allan Riverside\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><\/noscript><\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;<span class=\"TextRun SCXW217213604\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW217213604\">The main issue in Riverside is poverty. It\u2019s huge. Not to do with people working or not working, the fiscal element\u00a0is probably at most a fifth of what it is about. Poverty is about the broader determinants of poverty, such as your ability to engage with\u00a0society, being able to<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW217213604\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW217213604\">\u00a0afford to<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW217213604\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW217213604\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW217213604\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW217213604\">and\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW217213604\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW217213604\">having the confidence<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW217213604\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW217213604\">. I<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW217213604\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW217213604\">t overlaps into lower levels of educational attainment and has a reverse snowballing effect if you have a parental group\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW217213604\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW217213604\">from a lower educa<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW217213604\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW217213604\">tio<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW217213604\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW217213604\">nal attai<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW217213604\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW217213604\">n<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW217213604\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW217213604\">ment background then they are less able to support the\u00a0next generation in achi<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW217213604\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW217213604\">ev<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW217213604\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW217213604\">ing a better educati<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW217213604\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW217213604\">o<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW217213604\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW217213604\">n<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW217213604\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW217213604\">.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"TextRun SCXW122914929\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW122914929\">Samantha Shaw, 49,\u00a0community journalist<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW122914929\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW122914929\">\u00a0at Radio Cardiff<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-35302\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/11\/Samantha-625x351.jpg\" alt=\"Samantha Shaw Riverside journalist\" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-35302\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/11\/Samantha-625x351.jpg\" alt=\"Samantha Shaw Riverside journalist\" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW182537430\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW182537430\">\u201cPoverty, desperation and\u00a0opportunities. Lately, homelessness and drug addiction \u2013 it&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW182537430\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"AdvancedProofingIssue SCXW182537430\">very obvious<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW182537430\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW182537430\">. It\u2019s not like it\u2019s their fault or the area\u2019s fault, but drugs are quite a worrying thing lately. It\u2019s too commonplace.\u00a0It\u2019s quite cohesive though. Riverside is very diverse, but also very cohesive in the same way.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Mags, 63, team leader at Inroads Wellbeing Institute<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-35379\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/11\/Wellbeing-Centre-625x351.jpg\" alt=\"Wellbeing Centre Riverside Cardiff\" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-35379\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/11\/Wellbeing-Centre-625x351.jpg\" alt=\"Wellbeing Centre Riverside Cardiff\" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW80786899\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW80786899\">&#8220;We\u2019ve been here for over 20 years, but when we moved here from across the road\u00a0and refurbished it the local community started to be very negative.\u00a0They opposed the drug, alcohol and mental health centre. Even though the funding comes\u00a0from\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW80786899\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW80786899\">the drug and alcohol capital fund, so it couldn\u2019t have been used for anything else.\u00a0We had threats that they were going to torch it.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW80786899\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW80786899\">They<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW80786899\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW80786899\">\u00a0said, &#8216;You\u2019ve had the drunks and the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW80786899\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW80786899\">druggies,<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW80786899\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW80786899\">\u00a0now you\u2019re bringing the loonies too!'&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"TextRun SCXW121162810\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW121162810\">Arvinder, 22, off-license shop attendant<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-35310\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/11\/arv-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"Arvinder shop Riverside\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-35310\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/11\/arv-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"Arvinder shop Riverside\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW62540872\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW62540872\">\u201cIt\u2019s definitely gotten a lot\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW62540872\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"ContextualSpellingAndGrammarError SCXW62540872\">busier<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW62540872\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW62540872\">. A lot of these offices behind us have had a lot more people come in. All this\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW62540872\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW62540872\">used<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW62540872\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW62540872\">\u00a0to be vacant, but now there are a lot more people there the last couple of years. I don\u2019t think there are any major issues. Obviously, it could be a bit cleaner and tidier, but in general, I think\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW22762562\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW22762562\">it\u2019s<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW22762562\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW22762562\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW22762562\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"AdvancedProofingIssue SCXW22762562\">really good<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW22762562\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW22762562\">.
