{"id":36564,"date":"2018-12-14T14:34:02","date_gmt":"2018-12-14T14:34:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/intercardiff\/?p=36564"},"modified":"2018-12-14T14:34:02","modified_gmt":"2018-12-14T14:34:02","slug":"welsh-options-abound-student-learning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/business-culture\/welsh-options-abound-student-learning","title":{"rendered":"Welsh for All: options abound for student learning"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>With over 50,000 people speaking Welsh in Cardiff alone, what options are there for international students wanting to learn Welsh?<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_36568\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36568\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/global-city\/welsh-options-abound-student-learning\/attachment\/welsh_for_all\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-36568\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-36568\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/12\/Welsh_for_All-625x353.jpg\" alt=\"A green speech bubble overlaying a red speech bubble, with text beside it reading &quot;Cymraeg i Bawb, Welsh for All&quot;\" width=\"625\" height=\"353\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-36568\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-36568\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/12\/Welsh_for_All-625x353.jpg\" alt=\"A green speech bubble overlaying a red speech bubble, with text beside it reading &quot;Cymraeg i Bawb, Welsh for All&quot;\" width=\"625\" height=\"353\" \/><\/noscript><\/a> The portal in Cardiff University&#8217;s SIMS to sign up for the Welsh for All program<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Wannabe Welsh speakers at Cardiff University can learn the language through a unique program running alongside their regular courses called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.ac.uk\/welsh\/courses\/welsh-for-all\">Welsh for All<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Welsh for All, launched in October 2015, offers students across all disciplines free classes in Welsh at all levels.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the Welsh language is one of the most distinctive features that we have in Wales, makes us different from other parts of the world,\u201d said Dr Si\u00f4n Jones, lecturer at the School of Social Sciences. &#8220;It&#8217;s important that we do spend&#8230;time revitalising the Welsh language.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Jones\u2019s primary research focuses on developing Welsh-medium education in the south of Wales.<\/p>\n<p>Welsh for All is available to students at all levels from all courses, to take simply for fun or because they feel it might help them further their degrees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s fantastic in that it\u2019s free [and] it\u2019s offered to a range of people in the university so there are lots of kinds of people taking advantage of it,\u201d said Emma Watkins, an international student studying Welsh through the Welsh for All courses.<\/p>\n<p>Students signing up for the course have a variety of levels available, from beginner to advanced. The classes are designed to help people start using Welsh immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe way I studied French was very grammatically based, in terms of learning conjugations as one of the first things, and this is much more based in learning sentences and learning phrases. That\u2019s been very interesting as a way of learning, without necessarily defining every word in the sentence but basically being able to have a conversation by the end of the first class,\u201d said Watkins.<\/p>\n<p>Watkins&#8217; peers range from other Welsh and Celtic students to future nurses, doctors and lawyers. Students studying degrees in public service benefit from learning the language, and it assists in making Wales more accessible to both international students as well as students from Wales.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome people say sometimes they should learn an international language, okay, well, then learning Welsh doesn\u2019t stop you from doing that, and equally in somewhere like Cardiff there would be many more job opportunities for people who speak Welsh than any other single language other than English,\u201d said Dr. Dylan Foster Evans, head of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.ac.uk\/welsh\">School of Welsh<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_36569\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36569\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/global-city\/welsh-options-abound-student-learning\/attachment\/school_of_welsh\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-36569\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-36569\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/12\/School_of_Welsh-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"A sign reading &quot;Ysgol y Gymraeg, School of Welsh&quot;\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-36569\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-36569\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/12\/School_of_Welsh-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"A sign reading &quot;Ysgol y Gymraeg, School of Welsh&quot;\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><\/noscript><\/a> The School of Welsh hosts the Welsh for All Programme, aided by faculty and PhD students.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Welsh for All classes run on a weekly basis, where students of the same level meet once a week for two hours to learn phrases, words and play a game or two.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m coming from America, so I don\u2019t have a background in the Welsh language, so I\u2019m enrolled in Welsh for All as an opportunity to get a feel for the pronunciation\u2026being able to pronounce the names, place names\u2026is really important,\u201d said Watkins.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to providing Welsh enrichment, the program also helps to make other parts of the Welsh culture available for students to enjoy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of really interesting bilingual theatre and performance and music happening in Cardiff and, obviously while I\u2019m not fluent yet and there\u2019s still a learning curve, I would really love to be able to engage with that bilingual cultural scene that\u2019s thriving here,\u201d said Watkins.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Students at Cardiff can choose to study Welsh through the university&#8217;s unique language enrichment programme: Welsh for All<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":388,"featured_media":36570,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[5],"tags":[],"coauthors":[620],"class_list":["post-36564","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-business-culture"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.2 -
