(\u00a9 Andy Worthington)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Back in 2017, CNN predicted that 2018 would be \u2018The Year of Women\u2019, with women taking fourth-wave feminism to the mainstream, their political power set to rise further than ever before. Certainly, 2018 was full of incredible moments for feminists, such as the creation of the Time\u2019s Up movement, Saudi Arabian women gaining the right to drive, and a record number of women candidates winning Congress elections, to name a few.\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>However, the fight for equality continues, especially in Higher Education. A recent Guardian article revealed that in 2018, women made up only 36% of university boards, chairing only 19% of them, falling behind government targets. Universities are becoming increasingly more hostile\u00a0environments for\u00a0their female students, too, with a\u00a0recent\u00a0Revolt Student Assault survey revealing that 42% had experienced sexual assault during their time at university.\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Whilst these figures may seem bleak, there are people at these UK universities are working hard for change to come. (\u00a9 Emily Millward)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been a feminist for a long time but coming to university has made it more important to me.\u201d says Emily. \u201cThe main reason the Feminist Society was created because we felt there ought to be a space for those passionate about gender equality to come together\u00a0&#8211; there seemed to be no such thing in place when I came to Cardiff University.\u201d<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Emily is currently studying English Communication and\u00a0Philosophy, and\u00a0has noticed certain inequalities during her studies. \u201cUniversity can feel like a male dominated space, with certainly lots of my reading lists being 90% male.&#8221; she says. &#8220;But it also feels like a place to develop as a feminist and begin to figure out how we can change the future.\u201d\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The society has a thriving social media community in which members can come together. \u201cIt\u2019s lovely to get social media engagement for the society.\u201d says Emily. \u201cAfter one meeting on body positivity, we all posted unedited pictures of ourselves onto the Facebook page, and everyone left\u00a0encouraging\u00a0comments, which really highlighted how much of a support network and a community the society\u2019s become.\u201d<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Despite the welcoming community of the Feminist Society, Cardiff University\u00a0itself\u00a0has\u00a0previously\u00a0been portrayed as an unwelcoming environment for women over the last few years.\u00a0In September 2015, a series of sexual assaults occurred near the university, with female students being advised\u00a0not\u00a0to walk to and from lectures alone in the dark. During the 2017-18 academic year, over 100 students reported sexual abuse and violence to the new Cardiff University reporting scheme, with the head of the response team surprised by the volume of reports.<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_37354\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37354\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-37354\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2019\/01\/sexual-assault-625x351.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-37354\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-37354\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2019\/01\/sexual-assault-625x351.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" \/><\/noscript> Cardiff University received an alarming number of sexual harassment and assault reports during the 2017-18 academic year.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Emily, in her role as Feminist Society President, has\u00a0worked\u00a0closely with Cardiff Women\u2019s Aid (CWA) to\u00a0organise\u00a0events about sexual abuse and harassment over the last few months. \u201cI was definitely most proud of\u00a0our\u00a0event with CWA about violence in the workplace. It\u2019s such an important topic, as we see more and more stories emerge in the press about the increase in sexual harassment, and something definitely needs to change.\u201d<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Feminist Society includes both a Trans and BME Representative, with Emily eager to ensure an inclusive attitude to the society. \u201cIntersectional feminism,\u201d says Emily, \u201chas definitely become a more pressing issue over the last few years. To her, this made no sense, as women of\u00a0colour\u00a0were often discriminated against more due to their skin\u00a0colour\u00a0<i>and\u00a0<\/i>their gender.\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The term has increased in popularity during the last decade, but Emily feels that it isn\u2019t fully accepted yet. \u201cThere\u2019s still a long way to go,\u201d she says, \u201cbut I think that white, cis, straight feminism has begun to\u00a0realise\u00a0that it needs to acknowledge the rest of the population as the world becomes more connected than ever before.\u201d<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Emily isn\u2019t at all oblivious to the still controversial nature of\u00a0feminism, and\u00a0remains unsurprised whenever the society should face any backlash. \u201cThere were a few guys who came to our stall at the Freshers\u2019 Fair who accused us of being man-haters, and there\u00a0are\u00a0the occasional social media trolls who keep us entertained, but I don\u2019t take it to heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t have to look further than, say, Piers Morgan\u2019s twitter page to find negative attitudes towards feminism, as only last month, the journalist\u00a0criticised\u00a0many female pop stars for dressing \u2018sexually\u2019 and using their sexuality to sell records.\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_37350\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37350\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-37350\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2019\/01\/Men-Feminist-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-37350\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-37350\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2019\/01\/Men-Feminist-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><\/noscript> Emily is eager to encourage those of every gender to recognise themselves as feminists. (\u00a9 Rich Anderson)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But are men\u00a0more supportive of the feminist movement than social media leads us to think? \u201cWe have a Men\u2019s Rep on our society,\u201d says Emily, \u201cand many of our members are men who are just as eager to learn about feminism than everyone else.
