You\u2019re unlikely to conjure up images of old factories surrounded by builders and construction. It\u2019s in this industrial sector that you can find The Sustainable Studio occupying a former munitions factory. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span last space. \u201cWe have this strange connection with this space, both our grandparents used to work here\u201d Julia explained. \u201cYou know when you meet someone and you\u2019re just like wow, it was\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW37254316\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"SpellingError SCXW37254316\">kinda<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW37254316\" Cardiff\u00a0a suitable environment to work.\u00a0Recognising\u00a0that a lot of artists feel\u00a0isolated\u00a0often working from home or by themselves, the sisters have created a space for creatives where they can support one another as well as the greater communities of Riverside,\u00a0Grangetown, and\u00a0Butetown.\u00a0\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the first six months, around twelve of us shared the studio but we kept getting more and more people asking us to\u00a0join,\u201d Julia says. \u201cEven\u00a0from the beginning we wanted to create a community of people with a range of skills now we\u00a0have;\u00a0ceramicists, artists, illustrators, goldsmiths, filmmakers, photographers,\u00a0bloggers, animators, an\u00a0interior\u00a0designer.\u201d She\u00a0lists\u00a0off all these\u00a0profession&#8217;s\u00a0while bouncing her youngest child Esme on her lap. Even training Ikea staff to run community workshops, in a pilot\u00a0program\u00a0that has been adopted across the UK.\u00a0\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>While the Studio is seemingly going from strength to strength, the lease on the factory is coming to an end and the council seems to have little interest in renewing\u00a0it. This move has forced the sisters to look elsewhere around the city for affordable space.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere&#8217;s\u00a0a lot of history here in this building and we\u2019re\u00a0not saying\u00a0keep everything but give a little nod to it\u201d\u00a0Julia\u00a0argues. She says \u201cthe council should leave one\u00a0warehouse\u00a0or factory for artists to use. Bristol has let creatives take over loads of buildings and its lush. Cardiff is shit compared to Bristol when people travel here no one says \u201cyou need to go to this area or check out that artwork\u201d it\u2019s\u00a0really sad.\u201d<span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>After our interview, Julia gives me a full tour of the building and while discussing the future of The\u00a0Sustainable\u00a0Studio,\u00a0she\u00a0remains very\u00a0positive. Explaining that even though their time at the old\u00a0munitions&#8217;\u00a0factory didn\u2019t last\u00a0as long as\u00a0she would\u00a0have\u00a0liked. They built\u00a0it everything\u00a0within with the knowledge they would have to move it at\u00a0some\u00a0point,\u00a0so they\u2019ll hit the ground running when they find their new place. &#8220;In the next space, we want to be there on more of a long term lease, invest in that community there, outside and inside to hopefully have a positive impact on the city,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have 48 creatives from all walks of life working and getting along here, it&#8217;s quite remarkable!
