Still, he\u2019s spent 18 years educating people about wildlife off our west coast. The seasoned boat skipper explains the importance of protecting Pembrokeshire\u2019s marine life.<\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_37744\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37744\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-37744 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2019\/01\/boat-with-Zamon-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-37744\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-37744 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2019\/01\/boat-with-Zamon-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><\/noscript> Zeman picking up passengers at St Justinian&#8217;s harbour, soon to take them over to Ramsey Island in the distance.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 \u201cYears ago, I was out on the boat 10 miles offshore,\u201d said Zeman, \u201cWe were with dolphin, and it just stuck me, it\u2019s like, it\u2019s slightly absurd that I\u2019m competing with you for food.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0Nearly 20 years of working as a skipper yields interesting insights.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0\u201cIn Pembrokeshire,\u201d he said, \u201cThe two things that threaten wildlife are the weather and man. And ultimately, we seem to be effecting the weather as well.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0As Zeman spoke, perched on his motorbike, the rain came down so heavily on the roof his man-cave shed at times he was hard to hear.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0Zeman has a passion for motorcycles, and an interesting employment history including operating motorbike tours in Cambodia. He\u2019s clearly a man\u2019s man with a thrill-seeking side.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_37743\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37743\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-37743 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2019\/01\/edited-2-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-37743\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-37743 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2019\/01\/edited-2-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><\/noscript> Zeman sat atop his motorbike through the interview.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">\u201cSkippering in some of the biggest tides in the world and some of the biggest tidal races,\u201d he said, is part of what kept him interested in boat tours. \u201cWe get a tidal race that goes up to 18 knots at its very fastest, which puts it up there with rivers. They\u2019re the third biggest tides in the world\u2026 which means that in one day the sea will rise and fall by twenty-one feet, so, morning to lunch time will be very, very different.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">The company that Zeman has done much of his skippering for, Thousand Island Expeditions, works with the RSPB. The RSPB own several islands off the Pembrokeshire coast and maintain them as nature reserves. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">Ramsey Island, near St Davids, is closest to the shore and Thousand Island Expeditions provide the ferry service for visitors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0The picturesque island is actually fraught with danger. As Zeman explained, it has, \u201cProbably one of the top five most difficult harbours to put a boat into, commercially, in the UK because of the tidal race, being right next to the reef called the Bitches and the huge tidal difference that we get every day.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_37745\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37745\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-37745 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2019\/01\/lifeboat-in-tide-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-37745\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-37745 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2019\/01\/lifeboat-in-tide-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><\/noscript> The tide racing past the last two rocks of the Bitches reef. In the distance, St Davids lifeboat is returning to the harbour.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Although the adventurous nature of the job has its appeal, Zeman has been pulled back to Pembrokeshire for other reasons too. \u201cThere\u2019s not many places in the world that are like Pembrokeshire,\u201d he said, \u201cWhen I was kid growing up here, we thought everywhere had huge populations of seabirds and offshore wildlife and it\u2019s not the case at all. It\u2019s actually in very small pockets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ramsey is one of Europe\u2019s biggest seal colonies, and Grassholm island further offshore is home to over 100,000 gannets, which are the largest seabird in the north Atlantic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s that Chris Packham quote\u2026 the Pembrokeshire coastline has wildlife to rival the Serengeti in terms of numbers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zeman is not a not character you might think would be naturally drawn to wildlife, but his years of experience working in the marine environment have given him a rare knowledge and appreciation of it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cSeeing killer whale had the biggest impact,\u201d he said, \u201cBut then that\u2019s the biggest impact to a boat skipper who works every day amongst dolphin, and seals, and the third largest single rock gannetry in the Northern Hemisphere. So, that is the most incredible experience of a career of incredible wildlife experiences. It\u2019s at the top, but it\u2019s only just at the top.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_37750\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37750\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-37750 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2019\/01\/oyster-catcher-on-own-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-37750\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-37750 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2019\/01\/oyster-catcher-on-own-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><\/noscript> A lone oystercatcher perched on one of Ramsey Island&#8217;s rocks.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Zeman is keen to pass on the appreciation for this unique environment, \u201cI think that what we can do&#8230; is show people the environment and talking to them about how we effect it\u2026 then maybe suggesting that we could do things differently in order to not be such a threat to that wildlife.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pembrokeshire\u2019s islands are extremely important in their own right for protecting marine life. As Zeman puts it, \u201cThey\u2019re essential, absolutely essential. If you\u2019re getting decreasing bird populations in other areas and we\u2019re getting increasing, then we must still have fish stocks that birds can feed from.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s more to them than that. This remote corner of Wales provides a window into the wonders of the marine environment. \u201cWhen people come face-to-face with an Atlantic grey seal,\u201d he said, \u201cIt\u2019ll be by far the largest wild animal they\u2019re ever been close to, and, because the seals are very relaxed around the boats, they come to the boats so they\u2019re almost within touching distance\u2026 The biggest wild animal to touch land in the United Kingdom and it\u2019s almost touchable.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_37746\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-37746\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-37746 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2019\/01\/close-up-seal-3-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-37746\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-37746 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2019\/01\/close-up-seal-3-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><\/noscript> A young seal in the waters around Ramsey. Ramsey is home to around 1000 seals during the breeding season.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Aside from making great holiday memories, these experiences might have a bigger influence. \u201cIt\u2019s like the David Attenborough effect,\u201d Zeman explained, \u201cIt\u2019s a similar thing on a much smaller scale. City people need to go into the environment to learn more about it. If they experience it first hand, then they\u2019re going to better understand the problems that face it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s more, marine wildlife watching trips world over have been influenced by Pembrokeshire\u2019s pioneers. Zeman explained that Rigid-hulled inflatable boats \u2013 RHIBs \u2013 increased speed and efficiency while reducing cost, making offshore dolphin watching trips more accessible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe jet-driven RHIB industry started in St Davids,\u201d he said, \u201cThere were a couple of people worldwide that started that industry and one of the guiding lights, Shaun White, built his first boat on Ramsey Island.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although much of the area\u2019s unique wildlife populations seem stable, Zeman has concerns about over-fishing. \u201cAs they\u2019re increasingly tracking the birds with modern technology,\u201d he said, \u201cThey\u2019re finding that they\u2019re having to travel further and further to find the same fish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve already made a mess of the land,\u201d he said, \u201cAnd now we\u2019re out here\u2026 not even competing with the dolphin just for food, but we\u2019re taking that fish and we\u2019re feeding it to our cats, we\u2019re putting it in fertiliser&#8230; Or making skincare products out of it\u2026 We\u2019re actually down to the point where we\u2019re taking krill away from whales because we\u2019ve already eaten all the herrings, all the mackerel is disappearing, the cod were almost extinct.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The man is measured in his assessments of wildlife in the area, he\u2019s quick to point out that his experiences are anecdotal, not wanting to draw unscientific conclusions. Still, he went on to say, \u201cWe seem to be observing less common dolphin, and not in such great numbers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It seems we\u2019re lucky to still have this pocket of almost pristine nature just two hours\u2019 drive west of Cardiff, but we shouldn\u2019t take it for granted.<\/p>\n<p>As Zeman said, \u201cThe decision makers of the future\u2026 the future professionals and politicians\u2026 They\u2019ve got to be looking to the future otherwise there won\u2019t be any environment for us to pass on to our kids.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the nature reserves not so far from Cardiff, Wales&#8217; west coast boast some pretty amazing marine life.
