Photo by rawpixel on Unsplash<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>From elegantly wrapped headscarves to intricately embroidered burqas, demur niqabs to brightly patterned chadors, the Islamic practice of <em>hijab<\/em> is one of the more visible and at times controversial element of the religion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re so distinctive compared to everyone else out there, like, when people see <em>hijab<\/em>, they know of your faith, and straight away that you\u2019re a Muslim,\u201d said Noor Khan, a Cardiff University student.<\/p>\n<p><em>Hijab<\/em> refers both to the practice of modesty in Islam &#8212; everything from covering one\u2019s head to covering one\u2019s body &#8212; as well as a scarf wrapped around a woman\u2019s head to cover her hair and neck but keeps clear of her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince a very young age, what they tell us about <em>hijab<\/em> is, a woman, not only her hair, but her whole body, is sacred and priceless that should be kept only for herself,\u201d said Mahsa Gourdarzi, who grew up in Iran. \u201cAnd they say it\u2019s not a limitation, it\u2019s protection, and it adds to your prize, it makes you more respectable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Western media, there are a lot of misconceptions regarding <em>hijab<\/em>, many rising from strict interpretations of sharia law by patriarchal religious extremists in the Middle East such as the Taliban and Al-Qaeda, requiring every woman to wear <em>hijab<\/em>. Iran and Saudi Arabia have laws requiring compulsory <em>hijab<\/em>, where all women must wear some form of head covering regardless of religion.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWe took these photographs because we were inspired to showcase our love for hijab, in confidence, especially at a time when it is being misrepresented and misunderstood, and overlooked outside of a surface level preface.\u201d-Aya Mustafa, USA<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/FreeInHijab?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#FreeInHijab<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/WorldHijabDay?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#WorldHijabDay<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/YzRDAcBWG0\">pic.twitter.com\/YzRDAcBWG0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; World HijabDay (@WorldHijabDay) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WorldHijabDay\/status\/1091354263018721282?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 1, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>In non-Muslim majority countries, women who do wear <em>hijab<\/em> are often targeted for Islamophobic attacks where their headcovering is forcibly removed or are subjected to discriminatory treatment simply because of the visible demonstration of their faith.<\/p>\n<h3>World Hijab Day<\/h3>\n<p>In 2013, Nazma Khan, a resident of New York, in the United States, created <a href=\"https:\/\/worldhijabday.com\/\">World Hijab Day<\/a>, an annual recognition and celebration of <em>hijab<\/em> observed 1 February to help raise awareness and combat misconceptions surrounding <em>hijab<\/em>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_38001\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38001\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-38001\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2019\/02\/world_hijab_day_2019-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"Image of a smiling woman wearing a headscarf. Over her head reads &quot;Breaking stereotypes, shattering boundaries&quot;\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><\/noscript> World Hijab Day 2019 motto and hashtag<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The idea behind World Hijab Day was to help people understand what it is like to wear <em>hijab<\/em> by inviting non-Muslim women to wear a headscarf for a day.<\/p>\n<p>Four years ago, a friend of mine approached me to see if I would be interested in helping to create and observe a celebration of World Hijab Day at our college, in conjunction with discussions surrounding combating Islamophobia.<\/p>\n<p>It was something I had been curious about, and was grateful I was given the opportunity to experience it in a safe environment with the support of the Muslim community at my school.<\/p>\n<p>This February was the first year I interacted with people who did not know either about the day or that I was observing it, but fortunately I had a lot of really positive interactions.<\/p>\n<p>It was the first year I did so not in an insular environment, and I was more than a little nervous when I stepped out of my house wearing my headscarf, even though this was the fourth year I have observed World Hijab Day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s a great thing,\u201d said Asia Dirie, a Cardiff University pharmacy student. \u201cWomen supporting other women in their choices is amazing, especially in the current climate where unfortunately women who choose to wear a headscarf are targeted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the past six years, World Hijab Day has gained international attention, with women in countries all over the world organising events in schools, universities and places of work.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/WorldHijabDay?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#WorldHijabDay<\/a> 2019 event in Liberia organized by The Liberian Muslim Women Network. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/FreeInHijab?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#FreeInHijab<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/01otZyAdds\">pic.twitter.com\/01otZyAdds<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; World HijabDay (@WorldHijabDay) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WorldHijabDay\/status\/1093266184739454986?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 6, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Social media posts on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook showed pictures of women in <em>hijab<\/em>, hijabi women telling their stories of why they choose to wear it and women who were wearing one for the first time, all tagging their posts with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/FreeInHijab?src=hash\">#FreeInHijab<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Although World Hijab Day is generally positively received, there are groups and individuals who oppose the event on multiple grounds.<\/p>\n<p>A counter-hashtag this year was <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23FreeFromHijab&amp;src=typd\">#FreeFromHijab<\/a>, protesting mandatory <em>hijab<\/em> laws in places like Saudi Arabia and Iran, which require women to wear at least a headscarf in the presence of men.<\/p>\n<p>Such groups believe that World Hijab Day does not address these issues, though World Hijab Day organisers have been outspoken from their beginning that they do not agree with these practices. On their website, they write, &#8220;We strongly condemn forceful implementation of the\u00a0<em>hijab<\/em>. The choice should be left to the women.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be honest, the first thought that came to my mind when I heard this was, \u2018What about women who don\u2019t want to wear <em>hijab<\/em> and are, you know, are forced to do that?\u2019\u201d said Goudarzi, and though she feels there could be more to address obligatory or compulsory <em>hijab <\/em>beyond the work done by World Hijab Day, Goudarzi does appreciate how World Hijab Day fits into raising awareness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHonestly, I understand that perspective,\u201d said Noor, but she also said, \u201cIn Islam&#8230;you can\u2019t physically force someone to wear <em>hijab<\/em>, it has to be one\u2019s own interests, because that\u2019s like forcing her to be someone she doesn\u2019t want to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other counter-arguments are that women who are not Muslim should not wear <em>hijab<\/em>, that it is a form of cultural appropriation and therefore when <em>hijab<\/em> is worn by non-Muslims, the practice becomes less sacred.<\/p>\n<p>However, there are multiple cultures and religions that do practice head covering and modest dress for both men and women, and World Hijab Day makes sure to recognise these other practices as something separate from the Muslim practice of <em>hijab,<\/em> while still celebrating her choice.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\u201cI am not Muslim, but Kemetic Orthodox.\u00a0 My hijab is not required as a part of my faith, but for me personally,\u00a0 it is a sign of strength, faith, courage and hope.\u201d-Siobhan Welch,  USA<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/FreeInHijab?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#FreeInHijab<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/WorldHijabDay?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#WorldHijabDay<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/llLVrlAB8N\">pic.twitter.com\/llLVrlAB8N<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; World HijabDay (@WorldHijabDay) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WorldHijabDay\/status\/1091350602670592001?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 1, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The World Hijab Day organisation has also addressed these concerns with numerous articles on their site as well as posts that distinguish World Hijab Day as a celebration of women\u2019s choice to wear <em>hijab<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me <em>hijab<\/em> is a part of my identity,\u201d said Dirie, echoing hundreds of other women speaking up on World Hijab Day. \u201c[It is] a way for me to feel connected to my faith. It empowers me in a way, as I\u2019m choosing to dress the way I do, and taking ownership of my body and the choices I make regarding it, despite other people\u2019s thoughts and opinions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I feel very honoured to have been able to share this day with the hijabi women I know, and all the wonderful conversations I had on this and subsequent days as a result.<\/p>\n<p>It was also a really wonderful opportunity to learn more about what hijab means to women, like Goudarzi, who have experienced the oppression of mandatory hijab, and learn more about her experiences.<\/p>\n<p>All of my interactions with others were very positive, and I felt like I had the opportunity both to help others learn more about hijab and to learn more about what it means to women who do practice this aspect of their religion.<\/p>\n<p>For me, World Hijab Day is a powerful example of how women from across the world and religions come together to celebrate a simple practice and share their experience.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/create.piktochart.com\/output\/36168287-styles-of-hijab\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-37961\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2019\/02\/styles-5c-20of-_36168287-625x1665.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"1665\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-37961\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2019\/02\/styles-5c-20of-_36168287-625x1665.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"1665\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>In My Eyes<\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">With support and blessings from my sisters in \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0647, I wear a headscarf for <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WorldHijabDay?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@WorldHijabDay<\/a> to stand in solidarity with those who wear <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/hijab?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#hijab<\/a> and those who have had their right to wear hijab taken from them.
