According to tales and legends, the beginning of the Chinese New Year started with a mythical beast called the \u201cNian\u201d, which would come about every New Year\u2019s Eve to eat villagers. One year, an old man was brave enough to fight the monster alone, using fireworks and red lanterns, while other people hid safely in their houses. The villagers celebrated their survival, creating the phrase \u201cguo nian hao\u201d (the meaning of \u201cguo\u201d is similar to \u201csurvive\u201d, the meaning of \u201cnian\u201d is similar to \u201cyear\u201d, and the meaning of \u201chao\u201d is similar to \u201chappy\u201d).<\/p>\n

The greeting is originally a traditional auspicious pattern commonly used in clothing, construction and furniture. The pattern looks like \u534d and all lines are extended outward\u00a0from its center towards four ends vertically and horizontally. The symbol stands for longevity. Hence, the phrase can be used to represent a wish for endless hope.<\/p>\n

For example, the pronunciation of the word \u201cfish\u201d is similar to the word \u201cy\u00fa\u201d, which also means \u201csurplus\u201d. As a result, the first phrase is a wish for bountiful harvests every year.<\/p>\n

As breaking objects during the new year is considered inauspicious, one may say the second phrase immediately when something is broken. The pronunciation \u201cSu\u00ec\u201d, is homophonous with the word \u201cage\u201d, which implies everlasting peace.<\/p>\n
