Photo credits: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/joshloweshow\/\">Josh Lowe<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Thousands of people have signed a petition calling on the Senedd to begin the discussion, with an aim to bring carbon emissions down to zero.<\/p>\n<p>The recently launched <a href=\"https:\/\/www.assembly.wales\/en\/gethome\/e-petitions\/Pages\/petitiondetail.aspx?PetitionID=1474\">campaign<\/a> aims to pressure the Welsh government into enacting policies that will achieve carbon neutrality by 2025.<\/p>\n<p>One of the active members of Extinction Rebellion (XR) Cardiff, Nigel Pugh, who, leading the discussion at the meeting, talked about how declaring a climate emergency could boost action in Wales.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_39908\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39908\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-39908 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2019\/02\/Nigel-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-39908\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-39908 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2019\/02\/Nigel-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><\/noscript> Nigel Pugh says if the Welsh assembly declares climate emergency, it can lead to climate-inclusive policies and greater climate action<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He said, \u201cTo trigger the debate for a climate emergency in the Senedd, our petition needs to reach 5000 signatures. At the moment it met has over 4000 signatures. If the assembly declares the emergency, it will eventually think of ways for a transition to a low carbon economy. However, such a transition should occur with a short time-frame.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nigel spoke with relation to the recent report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) that warned of a 12 year period, in which the society has to initiate broader change. \u201cIf we fail to limit temperatures to 1.5\u00b0C, we are going to see a mass migration of people, and the collapse of nature, which is already happening. Politicians need to listen to accepted climate science.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The activists are also working on a draft petition specifically for the Cardiff Council, in order to push the city towards a zero carbon economy by 2030.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_39907\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39907\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-39907 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2019\/02\/Meeting_2-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-39907\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-39907 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2019\/02\/Meeting_2-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><\/noscript> The meeting was attended by volunteers from various walks of life including first-timers<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The weekly meeting of the Cardiff chapter of XR took place on 23 February and it was attended by volunteers from various walks of life, some of whom were taking part in environmental activism for the first time.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_39905\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39905\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-39905 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2019\/02\/Kat-625x351.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-39905\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-39905 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2019\/02\/Kat-625x351.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" \/><\/noscript> Kat Griffleson says she is worried for her children, as climate change threatens the survival of the human race<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI have two children and the reason I got involved with Extinction Rebellion is that I am not sure what sort of world would we and our children be inhabiting in the future,\u201d said Kat Griffleson, a member of XR Cardiff. \u201cIt would certainly be a very different one from now and I am scared for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Izzy, a musician and teacher, who also shared her motivations for getting involved. \u201cI am greatly interested in socio-environmental campaigns and want to explore how the arts, including music, can help to approach environmental issues and change peoples\u2019 minds.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_39904\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39904\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-39904 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2019\/02\/Izzy-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-39904\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-39904 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2019\/02\/Izzy-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><\/noscript> Izzy has recently joined Extinction Rebellion Cardiff and aims to raise environmental awareness through music<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Izzy also said, \u201cI think in Cardiff, we have a rebellious spirit to call for climate action but we are looking into engaging people and communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nigel did express his trust in the Welsh government for action on climate change but underlined issues, such as the affordability of making the transition to renewable energy. \u201cSadly, there is too much private interest that lobbies Westminster and Welsh government, which has brought us to this juncture of a climate emergency,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>XR Cardiff hopes to mobilise Cardiffians through its upcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/2017214531666346\/\">climate action protest<\/a>, to be held on 9 March.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe protest would have an animal-based theme, as the world is witnessing a drastic reduction in biodiversity,\u201d said Nigel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI urge everyone to participate in the protest, which will start from the City Hall and end at the new library building for speakers.
