What effect can events designed to platform their work have?<\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_41969\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41969\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-41969 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2019\/03\/open-mic-3-625x351.jpg\" alt=\"writer's pen on parchment\" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-41969\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-41969 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2019\/03\/open-mic-3-625x351.jpg\" alt=\"writer's pen on parchment\" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" \/><\/noscript> <strong>The &#8216;Where I&#8217;m Coming From&#8217; open mic event at Cardiff Central Library was the latest in a series aiming to platform and encourage BAME writers.\u00a0<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">An open mic event took place last Thursday in Cardiff aimed to give a platform to previously unheard minority perspectives in writing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The \u201cWhere I\u2019m Coming From\u201d monthly open mic night is aimed to allow BAME (Black Asian Minority Ethnic) writers to exhibit their artwork in a safe environment. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe aim is to normalize platforming BAME writers alongside non-BAME writers,\u201d said organizer Durre Shahwar. \u201cSome book festivals do a pretty good job but sometimes festivals don\u2019t do that. Sometimes BAME writers are just given, like, one slot, as opposed to equal slots.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">March\u2019s session was hosted by Cardiff Central library and held on National Poetry Day. (Photo by Central Library Hub)\u00a0<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt\u2019s really special having a space like this, because I actually know other writers of colour, friends who\u2019ve performed or read, who&#8217;ve said they wouldn\u2019t actually perform anywhere else because they wouldn\u2019t feel that it\u2019s safe,\u201d said Radha Patel, community developer and aspiring filmmaker. \u201cI guess I wouldn\u2019t feel comfortable either performing at other open mics because they just don\u2019t feel as safe as this space.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to Shahwar, some women of colour have felt that most of the open mic events in Wales didn\u2019t quite cater to them for various reasons, whether due to time, venue, or simply a lack of other BAME people present.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe last event that I was at, somebody actually said something quite offensive and they handled the situation so well. They opened the space up for people to respond to that and people to talk about it and for that issue to kind of be fixed. You get that immediate feedback from the audience whether something works or not,\u201d said Grug Nuse, a PHD literature student and aspiring writer who was one of the volunteers. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI think [opens mics like this] are important because if as an emerging writer you don\u2019t have a space where you can perform a work, you don\u2019t have that encouragement to take it further. And sometimes the platform is predominantly given to people who are already established,\u201d said Shahwar. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;I just think it&#8217;s\u2019 so important because it&#8217;s not just about not being white.
