Photo courtesy of Nadine Ballantyne.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Artists, venues, promoters and producers converged on the Tramshed on Friday night to honour the best and the loudest from the Cardiff music scene. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The ceremony presented awards across 22 categories, showcasing the breadth of talent thriving in the city. Here are the artists that took home the top trophies and a few honourable mentions for you to find this Spring.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>1. Best Group, Best Album &amp; Best Live Act: Boy Azooga<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This Cardiff indie band scored a hattrick at the CMA\u2019s this year, with their debut album \u20181,2, Kung Fu!\u2019 taking the top prize.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt means a lot to be recognized amongst such amazing music in Cardiff,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boyazooga.co.uk\">Boy Azooga<\/a> lead Davey Newington. \u201cWe\u2019re looking forward to putting some new music with you soon.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Newington wrote and recorded the album on his own \u2014 yes, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">playing<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> all instruments<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014 and now performs with friends Daf Davies, Dylan Morgan and Sam Barnes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>.embed-container { position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; overflow: hidden; max-width: 100%; } .embed-container iframe, .embed-container object, .embed-container embed { position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; }<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-container\"><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Newington was born to a family steeped in musical gifts, with both his parents having performed for the BBC National Orchestra of Wales\u2014 you can even hear his father playing violin in three of the album\u2019s tracks. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The premiere album flows through different genres, from classicism to synth-pop and disco-rock. Photo by Nadine Ballantyne.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chroma.band\/the-band\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CHROMA<\/a> is a three-piece band from Pontypridd that formed in 2015, fusing garage rock and pop-punk to create what they describe as a \u201cmelting pot of alternative rock.\u201d A strong feminist message booms out of their track \u2018Girls Talk\u2019, which scored hottest single of the year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe worked so hard on Girls Talk because the song and the message means so much to us,\u201d says Hall. \u201cIt means the world to us that people love and appreciate the song as much as we do, and we\u2019re so grateful for the amazing strong women and men who helped us create it!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The group has grown up in the Cardiff music scene, selling out popular (and CMA 2019 award-winning venue) Clwb Ifor Bach. Best Solo Act: MADI<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Successful local musician Maddy Jones transformed into experimental performer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.madibanduk.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MADI<\/a> in 2018 and is already racking up accolades. She describes her alternative, genre-bending electronic as as \u2018weirdo pop\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cSince my new sound and look is pretty weird and experimental, it\u2019s really gratifying to see that it\u2019s had an impact, and there\u2019s support for what I\u2019m doing,\u201d says Jones on winning Best Solo Act. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">MADI released three singles in 2018, including the dark fem epic \u2018Dirty (Word)\u2019 whose lyrics read \u201cI wish you wouldn\u2019t tell me what I believe. \/ Do you think you have the right to touch me? \/ I\u2019m not a dirty word.\u201d The video, below, was produced by exiled Turkish artist and Cardiff resident <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-wales-38690471\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pinar Ogun<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>.embed-container { position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; overflow: hidden; max-width: 100%; } .embed-container iframe, .embed-container object, .embed-container embed { position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; }<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"embed-container\"><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b>Fun fact:<\/b> The sophisticated costuming and stage design at MADI shows is done by her mother, the local Welsh landscape artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gigijones.co.uk\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gigi Jones<\/a>.<br \/>\n<b><\/b><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b>Where to find her: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At Focus Wales 2019 International Showcase Festival in Wrexham, England on May 18, 2019. <\/span><\/div>\n<h3><strong>4. Honourable mentions<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Of course there was more talent on display Friday night than this top three can handle. We would also like to shout out to the Best Local Promoter, Liz Hunt, who consistently books stellar acts at The Moon.
