{"id":62437,"date":"2021-02-05T02:27:18","date_gmt":"2021-02-05T02:27:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/?p=62437"},"modified":"2021-12-16T19:27:01","modified_gmt":"2021-12-16T19:27:01","slug":"a-generation-of-technical-educators-becoming-a-teacher-during-the-pandemic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/business-culture\/a-generation-of-technical-educators-becoming-a-teacher-during-the-pandemic","title":{"rendered":"A generation of technical educators: becoming a teacher during the pandemic"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Despite the rise of student teacher applications, their training has been deeply affected by Covid-19 regulations. <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The number of student teachers has seen a sharp growth as a reaction to the economic insecurity because of the pandemic, a UCAS report revealed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Wales, on<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucas.com\/file\/346901\/download?token=0Wrk_47a\"> June 15<\/a> there was a rise of 6.8% of student teachers in comparison to the same period the year before. Applications for secondary school training has reached a 19% increase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These numbers are encouraging as the shortages of secondary school teachers has been a<a href=\"https:\/\/gov.wales\/sites\/default\/files\/statistics-and-research\/2020-06\/initial-teacher-education-september-2018-august-2019-628.pdf\"> growing problem for Wales<\/a>. Although, distanced learning and COVID-19 restrictions are having a&nbsp;considerable affect on the preparation of to-be teachers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mariesa Thomas, a student teacher from Swansea, said: \u201cI honestly don\u2019t think I am gaining the correct experience I should be getting, which worries me about starting a job in September.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignwide is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" title=\"How student teachers have been impacted by the pandemic in Wales\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ptecc2u5kZY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><noscript><iframe title=\"How student teachers have been impacted by the pandemic in Wales\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ptecc2u5kZY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The placement is a vital component of their training. But, as the NFER (National Foundation for Educational Reasearch) report shows, some schools<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfer.ac.uk\/media\/4143\/the_impact_of_covid_19_on_initial_teacher_training.pdf\"> reduced or withdrew placement options<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Matthew Hare, an IT coordinator working in a Swansea secondary school, said that the school has decided not to have any placements this academic year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI do feel sorry for these student teachers,\u201d said Matthew, \u201c they are missing out on a massive chunk of their learning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The challenges of digital learning are affecting the opportunity to work itself. Emily Horan, a history trainee in a secondary school in Cardiff, said: \u201cIt was a lot of stress going into a new medium I had no experience with before. I had only been on the receiving end of online learning instead of being the person behind it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOnce you get used to it, the stress kind of lessens and it became a bit easier, a bit more manageable. But to start with, it was terrible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Distance learning is an unfamiliar approach to established teachers too, the ones that should be guiding trainees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anna Matthews, a student History teacher from Swansea&nbsp; said: \u201cEveryone does it different, all the teachers I have observed have done everything in different ways. Flexibility to accommodate students\u2019 needs is one of those.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor online lessons we have a thing called differentiation where we offer a variation of tasks for different student abilities,\u201d said Emily, \u201cyou just have to keep them motivated and keep them engaged.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite this, the hope is to go back soon to traditional in-class lessons. Anna said: \u201cI have gotten used to teaching online now so it\u2019s not so much of a shock to me anymore, but I do hope I can have the chance to teach children within the classroom as there are so
