This story, which she had spent months crafting and re-writing alone in her bedroom, was finally being heard by an audience of hundreds of people.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nia Morais\u2019 Welsh-language audio drama <em>Crafangau<\/em>, was her playwriting debut for Cardiff\u2019s Sherman Theatre. Since, she has become one of Wales&#8217; most promising young writers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having already mastered the skill of writing poetry, short stories and playwriting, the 25-year-old has earned herself a place on Literature Wales\u2019 new writers&#8217; development programme <em>Representing Wales<\/em>, which aims to help support and promote writers from black, asian and minority ethnic backgrounds across the country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, despite her recent success, Morais confesses to have experienced numerous knockbacks since entering the professional writing sphere. \u201cI started submitting to international journals and things like that, and then got really disheartened when I didn\u2019t get anything published,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2021\/05\/nia-2.0-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-66800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2021\/05\/nia-2.0-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2021\/05\/nia-2.0-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2021\/05\/nia-2.0-770x433.jpg 770w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2021\/05\/nia-2.0-293x165.jpg 293w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2021\/05\/nia-2.0.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2021\/05\/nia-2.0-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-66800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2021\/05\/nia-2.0-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2021\/05\/nia-2.0-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2021\/05\/nia-2.0-770x433.jpg 770w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2021\/05\/nia-2.0-293x165.jpg 293w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2021\/05\/nia-2.0.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/noscript><figcaption>The 25-year-old writer found her love for writing at school and pursued an MA in Creative Writing at Cardiff University (Image by Nia Morais)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Taking inspiration from her upbringing in Cardiff and her Welsh Cape Verdean heritage, Morais is unafraid of intertwining themes of diversity, identity, survival and racism throughout her work. \u201cI write a lot about being bilingual and mixed race,\u201d she says, \u201cthe weird tensions that rise up, and being unsure about your own identity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her audio drama <em>Crafangau<\/em> is a prime example of this, which tells the story of a young girl called Mason who struggles to live up to the white beauty standards that her grandmother enforces on her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In search of other fellow writers attempting to break through the publishing world\u2019s hard exterior, Morais began to find her feet after joining the Cardiff-based open mic collective, <em>Where I\u2019m Coming From<\/em>. Set up by writers Hassan Issa and Durre Shahwar, the group aims to promote and create a creative community for underrepresented writers in Wales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>Where I\u2019m Coming From<\/em> is really important for Cardiff. I felt like they definitely helped me along with getting my name out there,\u201d said Morais, \u201cI applied to be in one of their virtual open mics, and it was a really supportive kind of environment and I really enjoyed it. The audience were really cool and encouraging, so I feel like that definitely gave me a boost in my confidence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" title=\"PLETHU\/ WEAVE | Gweddi am Frws Gwallt | Nia Morais &amp; Angharad Harrop\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/caDvSSoOpuI?start=26&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><noscript><iframe title=\"PLETHU\/ WEAVE | Gweddi am Frws Gwallt | Nia Morais &amp; Angharad Harrop\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/caDvSSoOpuI?start=26&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript>\n<\/div><figcaption>As a bilingual writer growing up in Wales, the Welsh language has become an integral part of Nia&#8217;s work <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>According to team member and up-and coming writer, Taylor Edmonds, the group was created in response to a lack of safe spaces and open mics for writers of colour in the Welsh capital.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>Where I\u2019m Coming From<\/em> has always had a strong sense of community, I\u2019ve met many friends there who have been an integral part to helping me find my feet in the creative scene in Wales,\u201d says Edmonds, \u201csharing your work can be a vulnerable experience and it\u2019s rare to find a space where everyone feels supported and able to just show up as they are.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The collective has seen a number of its writers see success, with its founder Hassan Issa\u2019s work being widely published on platforms such as BBC Wales and Poetry Wales, and Taylor Edmonds having been recently nominated as the poet in residence for the Future Generations Commissioner for Wales.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2021\/05\/181634292_276803594163749_2559512167979058432_n.jpg\" alt=\"This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is 181634292_276803594163749_2559512167979058432_n.jpg\" width=\"774\" height=\"435\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2021\/05\/181634292_276803594163749_2559512167979058432_n.jpg\" alt=\"This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is 181634292_276803594163749_2559512167979058432_n.jpg\" width=\"774\" height=\"435\" \/><\/noscript><figcaption>Taylor Edmonds is a key figure in Cardiff&#8217;s creative writing scene, drawing on themes such as connection, empowerment, womanhood and identity (Image by Taylor Edmonds)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Although diversity schemes have become more commonplace for underrepresented writers to get a foot in the publishing door, Morais still feels more needs to be done to create true diversity and representation in Welsh literature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said: \u201cI think it&#8217;s good there are more and more diverse writers cropping up all over Wales and that we\u2019re getting more diversity in general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;But what inspired me to apply for the (Representing Wales) programme was not just for getting better as a writer, but also because I just happened to have read a lot of books for children over the past year, and I kind of felt like children\u2019s literature was still not really very diverse.
