{"id":71560,"date":"2021-12-17T10:47:13","date_gmt":"2021-12-17T10:47:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/?p=71560"},"modified":"2021-12-17T11:17:43","modified_gmt":"2021-12-17T11:17:43","slug":"electric-cars-are-they-the-way-forward-to-green-transport-in-wales","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/science-environment\/electric-cars-are-they-the-way-forward-to-green-transport-in-wales","title":{"rendered":"Electric Cars: are they the way forward to green transport in Wales?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">As Wales plans to achieve carbon-free transport by 2050, experts assess the utility of electric vehicles and how sustainable they can be.&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Wales will face several challenges on its way to adopting electric vehicles as a means of making all transport sustainable and carbon free by 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emma Sandrey, Cardiff Councillor of Pentwyn, believes that electric cars in Wales still have a long way to go in comparison to petrol and diesel cars, despite the Welsh Government\u2019s plan to reduce carbon emissions and shift to greener modes of transport.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think there&#8217;s a very dangerous assumption being made that people can just switch from petrol and diesel [cars] to electric. That is not going to be possible on a practical level but also in terms of the sustainability level,\u201d Sandrey said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re really not addressing a whole range of issues that are as a result of the sort of car culture that we have.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Electric car ownership in the UK is at an all-time high, with over 675,000 electric vehicles on the road. However, less than 2% of all cars in Wales are electric.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" title=\"Electric Cars in Wales\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/g4k6KjzrmsY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><noscript><iframe title=\"Electric Cars in Wales\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/g4k6KjzrmsY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript>\n<\/div><figcaption>Electric Vehicles in Wales &#8211; A long way to go<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Peter Wells, Director of the Centre for Automotive Industry Research, younger people are more in favour of electric cars than older people, but they don\u2019t have the money for it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWales, compared to the rest of the UK, is relatively poor,\u201d said Wells. \u201cAs of right now, buying electric cars is something only fairly wealthy people can be doing. But maybe time will see that trickle down a bit.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Electric vehicles have a significant role to play in securing a greener future for roads. Wells, however,&nbsp; believes that there are a lot of issues that remain to be addressed when it comes to EVs.
