Yet, almost 10 years after her campaign started, Laura fears that accessibility to menstrual products across the United Kingdom is worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA lot of organisations that look in the alternatives people have when they need to choose between food and periods have heard of people resorting to newspapers and used socks,\u201d said Laura.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis obviously poses huge health implications and risks and it&#8217;s quite invisible as well because you can&#8217;t tell when someone&#8217;s doing that and they&#8217;re not likely to share it with you because it&#8217;s embarrassing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" title=\"How to talk to your children about periods?\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WNDHuSYL1ms?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><noscript><iframe title=\"How to talk to your children about periods?\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WNDHuSYL1ms?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Molly Fenton, Co-Founder of the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LoveYourPeriod1\">Love Your Period Campaign<\/a>, said that the cost of living crisis has pushed more people into period poverty. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe see a rise of people not being able to have products now that before Covid or during Covid were able to access products,\u201d said Molly Fenton, Co-Founder of the Love Your Period campaign.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s kind of like a new territory for them not understanding what this poverty, when it comes to periods is like.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/yougov.co.uk\/topics\/politics\/articles-reports\/2022\/09\/14\/period-poverty-one-eight-likely-struggle-afford-sa\">September 2022 survey<\/a>, estimated that one in eight women and people having periods would struggle to afford sanitary products this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe most shocking story I had was of a year 11 pupil who had only recently been unable to afford products since this academic year, and she&#8217;d go to school, use one dirty sock overnight and would then use the second dirty sock from the previous day,\u201d said Molly. \u201cThat&#8217;s really dangerous. I asked her if she knew that there are free products in school while bearing in mind they&#8217;ve been in since 2019, and she didn&#8217;t because the school hadn&#8217;t advertised it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2023\/02\/Welsh-Women-face-period-poverty.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-77633\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2023\/02\/Welsh-Women-face-period-poverty.jpg 750w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2023\/02\/Welsh-Women-face-period-poverty-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2023\/02\/Welsh-Women-face-period-poverty-293x165.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2023\/02\/Welsh-Women-face-period-poverty.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-77633\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2023\/02\/Welsh-Women-face-period-poverty.jpg 750w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2023\/02\/Welsh-Women-face-period-poverty-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2023\/02\/Welsh-Women-face-period-poverty-293x165.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/noscript><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Campaigners are working towards making menstrual hygiene products more accessible to people across the country.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Welsh Government announced<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.wales\/period-proud-wales-action-plan-html#113882\"> Period Proud Wales Action Plan<\/a> which outlines its plans to end period poverty over the next five years and has already spent over \u00a3 13 million towards ending period poverty since 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, campaigners are worried that pupils in schools are not aware that they can avails period products free of cost in their schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Laura said, \u201cTheoretically, all state schools are able to order free period products at zero cost through the government, but we still find in a lot of schools that they don&#8217;t distribute them to kids, very effectively.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> \u201cOne school that we visited, had a system where kids had to come to reception and write their name to sign out products, which obviously they&#8217;re not really going to do if they&#8217;re embarrassed about it in the first place,\u201d  said Laura. \u201cSo they technically did have free period products, but no one was using them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Molly explained further that in a survey conducted by Love Your Period amongst 3000 pupils in Cardiff, there wasn&#8217;t a single student who knew that reusable sanitary products were available in their schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said, \u201cPupils need to know what these products actually are. The government announced that a lot of money would be going to different charities across the UK and this was supposed to be a celebration. It was kind of like it was the end but really, did anyone see this money come up?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd because of inflation, these prices now are ridiculous. We&#8217;re at a point where we don&#8217;t buy products in our house,&#8221; she says. &#8220;We are lucky that we&#8217;ve never had an issue with period poverty, but we, we just can&#8217;t afford them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Molly believes that UK lawmakers lack the proper knowledge of the ground scenario with regard to period poverty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think they&#8217;ve got the statistics, but that&#8217;s it. Realistically, if we put a survey in front of young people and ask them about period poverty, what are they going to say?\u201d said Molly. \u201cWouldn\u2019t stigma make them feel like they can&#8217;t put that in because it\u2019s embarrassing?&#8221; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> \u201cWe know realistically that a survey doesn&#8217;t really paint the picture and those politicians only having that and those who are making these policies and laws and legislations don&#8217;t necessarily have the photo of what&#8217;s really going on.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whereas, Laura believes that the lawmakers have all the tools they need to end period poverty but lack the will to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think they definitely can and if you look at other countries like Scotland for example, then you see that lawmakers not just can deal with it, but have started to really deal with it through policy,&#8221; she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s just that our lawmakers don&#8217;t want to at the moment, which is very frustrating, and I think they&#8217;re kind of using period stigma to justify that since they don&#8217;t really have to talk about it because people still find it difficult to talk about.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As the Welsh government announced  &#8216;Period Proud Wales&#8217; action plan, campaigners say the situation has turned worse.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":957,"featured_media":77646,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[14,17],"tags":[120,269,277],"coauthors":[1152],"class_list":["post-77613","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-politics-social-justice","category-sport-health","tag-charities","tag-homelessness","tag-human-rights"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.2 -
