As this graphic shows, the areas in the north and north-east have the lowest population density, matching with what Sergio Del Molino describes as <em>Empty Spain.<\/em> Image: Wikipedia Commons. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Castrillo is not completely empty during the cold winter months, the ongoing problems associated with rural depopulation means, at its worst, that thousands of Spanish villages like my own could become less and less populated until they are reduced to virtually nothingness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Valare\u00f1a, a village with a population of around 285 in the autonomous community of Arag\u00f3n, is in a similar although slightly healthier position than Castrillo, in part due to the prominent role <a href=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/life360\/if-it-was-not-for-the-women-our-village-would-already-be-dead\/\">that its women play<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B-lzk6lpPqf\/\n<\/div><figcaption><em>Viajar por Arag\u00f3n (Travel through Arag\u00f3n) publishes a virtual tour of Valare\u00f1a.<\/em> <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>And the experiences of its residents typifies many of the day to day struggles which living in small villages in both Arag\u00f3n and Castilla Y Le\u00f3n entail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;When the antenna does not work, we are totally disconnected, the lack of mobile signal means we can&#8217;t use our phones, nor the internet, nor wi-fi, not even our landline. I remember being totally disconnected like this for over a week,&#8221; states Paola Biota, one of its residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;And it enrages us to see them cut back our rights and services little by little so that the village disappears,&#8221; she adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lack of technological investment in Castilla Y Le\u00f3n and Arag\u00f3n is one of the main factors which has stimulated, or at least exacerbated, the recent trend of rural depopulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a point made by Soria \u00a1Ya!, a campaigning group founded in 2001 to spread awareness of the problems which exist in both the city and province of Soria, in Castilla Y Le\u00f3n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CByKgsmioxz\/\n<\/div><figcaption><em>Members of Soria \u00a1Ya! campaigning outside the Congreso de Diputados, where the Spanish parliament sits. <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It is not just about having internet or wi-fi of a high standard, but also having phone signal. There are many parts of the province which don&#8217;t even have mobile coverage,&#8221; says Vanesa Garcia, its spokesperson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;In terms of telecommunications, with the current situation of the pandemic we have realised how important they are,&#8221; she continues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Between 2010 and 2017, as reported in national newspaper<em><em>El Pa\u00eds<\/em><\/em>, 62% of all small villages and towns lost <a href=\"https:\/\/english.elpais.com\/elpais\/2019\/04\/01\/inenglish\/1554107629_170580.html\">population.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, as research for this project, I asked 100 people from across the country several questions. One of those was the main challenges for rural Spain and, as can be seen below, several of them emerged. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/tNTOy\/1\/\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"186\"><\/iframe><noscript><iframe src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/tNTOy\/1\/\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"600\" height=\"186\"><\/iframe><\/noscript>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, a point made by campaigning groups such as Soria \u00a1Ya! is that the lack of investment in technology is by no means the only issue which has driven these trends of rural depopulation.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" title=\"La M.O.D.A. \\ Campo Amarillo\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GMGBK_qhPj8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><noscript><iframe title=\"La M.O.D.A. \\ Campo Amarillo\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GMGBK_qhPj8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript>\n<\/div><figcaption><em>LA M.O.D.A, an Indie-Spanish group, and their 2018 song Campo Amarillo, Yellow Fields, which is a tribute to rural Spain.<\/em> <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Throughout the 19 years that Soria \u00a1Ya! has been active, many of our protests and points of contention are still the same today,&#8221; states Vanesa Garcia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Infrastructure, the hospital, healthcare, formation, attracting businesses to the area. They are all the same,&#8221; she adds. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked what measures they wanted the government to take, the respondents of the survey did not hold back. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"width: 100%\"><div style=\"padding-bottom: 56.25%;padding-top: 0;height: 0\"><iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/view.genial.ly\/5f38f608b862960cf11a41fc\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" scrolling=\"yes\"><\/iframe><noscript><iframe frameborder=\"0\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/view.genial.ly\/5f38f608b862960cf11a41fc\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" scrolling=\"yes\"><\/iframe><\/noscript> <\/div> <\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Nonetheless, the last few years have witnessed, spurred on by Sergio Del Molino\u2019s 2016 academic work <em>Empty Spain<\/em>, an upsurge in political attention to this increasingly urgent problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the 31 March 2019 Soria \u00a1Ya! joined more 100,000 people from 20 provinces and 100 political associations in protesting as part of the \u201crevolt of Empty Spain\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"es\" dir=\"ltr\">El latido de la <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Espa%C3%B1aVaciada?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Espa\u00f1aVaciada<\/a> que hoy ha llenado la Plaza de Neptuno. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TeruelExiste_?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@TeruelExiste_<\/a> \ud83d\udcaa <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/cX1CL4bg7s\">pic.twitter.com\/cX1CL4bg7s<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Nacho Civera (@nachocivera) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nachocivera\/status\/1112329530314772481?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 31, 2019<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><figcaption><em>Members of Teruel Existe, another campaigning group, in Madrid&#8217;s Neptune Square. <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We do consider action towards climate change, women&#8217;s role, education, food and resources as necessary. But also, we want basic services,&#8221; states Vanesa Garcia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;For everything we have to travel many miles. There is little safety in villages because they closed the quarters of the Civil Guards. This all amounts to people not wanting to come and live in the villages, and the few that are here logically want to leave,&#8221; she explains. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Paola Biota, back in Valare\u00f1a, a village with a population of 285 (it has decreased by 50 since 2010), she argues that a crucial factor in this is the lack of services, which has led many families to migrate to nearby Ejea de los Caballeros, a town with a population of over 16,000. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Located just 15 kilometres away, Ejea de los Caballeros is an example of an important trend in the changing Spanish landscape: the growth of larger towns which, at the same time, exacerbates the demise of smaller villages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/4\/40\/Ejea_de_los_Caballeros_27.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/4\/40\/Ejea_de_los_Caballeros_27.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/noscript><figcaption>Ejea de los Caballeros. Image: Wikipedia Commons.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The rise of urban towns and cities has meant that the inhabitants of small villages, and especially women, have in some cases little choice but to abandon them in search for work, especially in the aftermath of the 2008 global financial crash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/396415a2-7778-4675-8bec-da8fca154bca\"><em>The Financial Times<\/em>, <\/a>the Spanish economy could also be the most affected by the Coronavirus pandemic, potentially further exacerbating trends of rural depopulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As it stands, the residents of rural Spain believe that the future of rural Spain is at a crossroads<strong>. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"width: 100%\"><div style=\"padding-bottom: 56.25%;padding-top: 0;height: 0\"><iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"800px\" height=\"400px\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/view.genial.ly\/5f3818da8cbaf00db5594161\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" scrolling=\"yes\"><\/iframe><noscript><iframe frameborder=\"0\" width=\"800px\" height=\"400px\" src=\"https:\/\/view.genial.ly\/5f3818da8cbaf00db5594161\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" scrolling=\"yes\"><\/iframe><\/noscript> <\/div> <\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Economic issues apart, one of the most important factors behind rural depopulation is linked to education. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen a school shuts, a village receives its death sentence,\u201d remarked Jordi Marin, a Chemistry and Physics teacher, to national radio station <em>Cadena Ser. <\/em>&nbsp;<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, a school closure in a rural village in Castilla Y Le\u00f3n or Arag\u00f3n is not just an unfortunate incident or an inconvenience to a few, isolated people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A village cannot sustain itself without children, and children cannot be sustained without education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A school being forced to shut down due to financial problems, a lack of children in the area, or difficulties in finding suitable teaching arrangements, as is regularly the case throughout rural Spain, can spell the beginning of the end of that village&#8217;s prospects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the province of Le\u00f3n, as reported in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lanuevacronica.com\/una-espana-vaciada-de-tizas-y-pizarras\"><em>La Nueva Cronica<\/em><\/a>, almost 200 rural schools have shut down since 1991.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lanuevacronica.com\/imagenes\/articulos\/escuelarural-19-10-19.jpg\" alt=\"Gr\u00e1fico con las escuelas de CRA que han cerrado y las que se mantienen abiertas. | L.N.C.\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lanuevacronica.com\/imagenes\/articulos\/escuelarural-19-10-19.jpg\" alt=\"Gr\u00e1fico con las escuelas de CRA que han cerrado y las que se mantienen abiertas. | L.N.C.\" \/><\/noscript><figcaption>In Green are the schools that have remained open, whilst the red are those that have shut. Source: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lanuevacronica.com\/una-espana-vaciada-de-tizas-y-pizarras\">La Nueva Croinic<\/a><\/em>a<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Paola Biota, in Valare\u00f1a, is one of many to have gone to school in their rural village and thus well equipped to talk about her experience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStudying in my village was good, but slowly by slowly the school is getting empty. There is a low birth rate and the school is increasingly with less children; it has come close to shutting several times,\u201d Paola explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One factor behind this is the lack of resources upon which rural schools can count upon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe count on less resources and not as good infrastructure as in urban cities and bigger villages. The resources we do count on is few and far between and generally older,\u201d Paola states. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn terms of extracurricular activity, we have no choice but to travel two or three times a week to Ejea de los Caballeros for that,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In spite of the problems associated with school closures and resources, Paola Biota states that she had an education which was happy and of a high standard.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDespite doing university degrees and getting through school, like everyone else, they call us stupid and uncultured because of our accent or way of speaking,\u201d she claims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eldiario.es\/sociedad\/mejor-calidad-educativa-escuela-urbana_1_1565503.html\"><em>El Diario.es<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>article in 2019 about the previous PISA tests suggested that, when comparing children of the same socio-economic background, a better education was imparted in rural schools than in their urban counterparts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBecause there are so few pupils, we are all in the same class, and there is just one teacher for everyone&#8230;this can also be an advantage, since we are treated more personally and there is greater unity between us all,\u201d Paola explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe ability to have your school 5 minutes away from your home is something we really like,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But problems in rural education go much deeper than villages laying claim to primary and secondary schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even in the occasions where young people such as Paola get to study in their local village, university graduates tend to, as reported in <em>El Pa\u00eds<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/elpais.com\/politica\/2020\/02\/05\/actualidad\/1580929738_171067.html\">move to bigger cities<\/a> such as Madrid or Barcelona for work-opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If education is one of the main problems which exarcebates rural depopulation, then healthcare is another. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We want the modernisation and amplification of the Santa Barbara hospital,&#8221; argues Vanesa Garcia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We currently have to travel to places like Valladolid or Burgos (an hour or two drive away) if we want certain specialist treatment,&#8221; she adds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To this end, the shortage of doctors is a clear sticking point. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Castilla-La Mancha, another autonomous community within Empty Spain, counts on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eldiario.es\/castilla-la-mancha\/palabras-clave\/falta-medicos-problema-preocupa-pacientes_132_1282222.html\">395 doctors <\/a>per 100,000 people, which is 81 less than the country&#8217;s average. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the main problems associated with rural health is the lack of young doctors who practice in Castilla Y &nbsp;Le\u00f3n, as the data chart highlights below. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-wordpress aligncenter wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-datawrapper\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" title=\"Average ages of Doctors in Castilla Y Le\u00f3n \u00a0\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/Tm9P8\/1\/#?secret=sspHwjZ4Wl\" data-secret=\"sspHwjZ4Wl\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"400\"><\/iframe><noscript><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" title=\"Average ages of Doctors in Castilla Y Le\u00f3n \u00a0\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/Tm9P8\/1\/#?secret=sspHwjZ4Wl\" data-secret=\"sspHwjZ4Wl\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"400\"><\/iframe><\/noscript>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Although health, education and investment in technology are 3 of the main causes for rural depopulation, they are not the only ones. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The biggest challenge of today and in the future is to avoid depopulation. There isn&#8217;t a magical formula which can solve it, there are many circumstances which all need to come together,&#8221; states Vanesa Garcia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Part of the circumstances which Vanesa Garcia would like to come together include policies  aimed at addressing inequality and supporting entrepreneurial women. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We are hopeful that the future of Empty Spain is very positive and finally we can solve the inequalities that still exist,&#8221; she states.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the problems associated with rural depopulation, residents are also keen to extol some of its benefits. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"width: 100%\"><div style=\"padding-bottom: 56.25%;padding-top: 0;height: 0\"><iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/view.genial.ly\/5f38f60bb862960cf11a41fe\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" scrolling=\"yes\"><\/iframe><noscript><iframe frameborder=\"0\" width=\"800\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/view.genial.ly\/5f38f60bb862960cf11a41fe\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" scrolling=\"yes\"><\/iframe><\/noscript> <\/div> <\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>And, despite the rise of small towns, urbanisation, school closures and problems with health centres, not everyone has left their village, as Paola is keen to demonstrate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I have been lucky enough to find work in my village, meaning I can stay here. Ever since I was little I always wanted to live here,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I am very proud of my village. I have the best memories of my life here and I hope to make many more to come. It&#8217;s my land. My roots. My people.
