(Credit: Brooke Lark) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Claudia Congrave had interned for plenty of magazines, but she never felt completely comfortable. So, when she decided to launch her own publication, it felt like a weight had lifted off her shoulders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d always felt like I didn\u2019t want to go down the traditional journalism route,\u201d she explains. \u201cIt almost felt like traditional media was a little bit too conservative for my liking.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI felt like I wanted to talk about things that were important to me, that weren\u2019t necessarily being spoken about in the mainstream media. And I just thought: I want to make a space that is my own, that is collaborative, that\u2019s not just my voice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Claudia Congrave launched her online publication, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mouthymagazine.com\/\"><em>Mouthy Mag<\/em><\/a>, in June 2020 after graduating from university. (Credit: Claudia Congrave)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Jane Bentley, the course director of MA Magazine Journalism at Cardiff University, agrees that diversity is an issue for major publications and that self-published magazines are a remedy for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She says: \u201cThere has been an issue with a diversity of voices and visibility in the existing structures. The big publishing companies are huge beasts, it\u2019s tricky to get a foot in the door. I think that side of the industry is making improvements but a lot of people who have specific stories to tell, they can just do that much more easily and directly themselves via digital. So they are telling these incredibly powerful stories in really creative ways and finding their audience much more quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, this year\u2019s NCTJ diversity in journalism report found that<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nctj.com\/latestnews\/new-report-on-diversity-in-journalism-published\"> journalism is 92% white<\/a> and 75% of journalists come from the highest social classes. (Credit: The Climate Reality Project) <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of this lack of diversity in advertising and funding, there is a lack of diversity in the content produced. Jane explained that \u201cyou can\u2019t be what you can\u2019t see; it\u2019s about the visibility.\u201d Reuters Institute in fact found that only<a href=\"https:\/\/reutersinstitute.politics.ox.ac.uk\/women-and-leadership-news-media-2020-evidence-ten-markets\"> 22% of top editors across leading publications were women<\/a>, in their 2021 \u2018Women and Leadership in the News Media\u2019 study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Claudia Rutherford, an MA International Journalism student at Cardiff University, started her own publication, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.santesdwynwenmag.com\/\"><em>Santes Dwynwen<\/em><\/a><em>,<\/em> to highlight the voices of welsh women.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s difficult not to feel a sense of imposter syndrome when you&#8217;re in a room full of men,\u201d she says. \u201cI think that&#8217;s because the industry is so inaccessible that it&#8217;s made a lot of people feel like they don&#8217;t belong. Luckily I&#8217;m surrounded by so many inspiring women from the same class background as me, which reminds me that I deserve to be in the industry just as much as anybody else. That definitely fuels my ambition to champion their work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>I think a lot of us are creating spaces that we&#8217;ve longed for. We&#8217;ve built our own spaces out of necessity.<\/p><cite>Claudia Rutherford<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>To both of them, being a woman that inspires change is important. Claudia Congrave explains that one of the reasons she was put off working for a major publication is the stereotype of the \u2018suit-and-tie businessman\u2019 controlling the organisation. She likes to challenge that clich\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m literally just a girl that graduated,\u201d she states plainly. \u201cI\u2019m nothing special.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignwide is-type-wp-embed is-provider-genially wp-block-embed-genially\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" title=\"TIPS to create publication\" frameborder='0' width='1200' height='674' src='https:\/\/view.genial.ly\/60cb865b3da7300dd5d5aff7#?secret=GupeFNpQt8' data-secret='GupeFNpQt8' scrolling='yes'><\/iframe><noscript><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" title=\"TIPS to create publication\" frameborder='0' width='1200' height='674' src='https:\/\/view.genial.ly\/60cb865b3da7300dd5d5aff7#?secret=GupeFNpQt8' data-secret='GupeFNpQt8' scrolling='yes'><\/iframe><\/noscript>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Jane adds that there is a lack of access to editorial roles in major publications for women because of the nature of the roles. \u201cIt is quite a consuming lifestyle,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd so I think maybe for some women, particularly if they\u2019ve got children and other commitments, that they can\u2019t necessarily commit in the same way [as men could].\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s because of this, she adds, that a lot of women want to create their own publications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat confluence of moments that have been coming down the track for a long time,\u201d she says, \u201cIt\u2019s exploded and people can think that they can work on their own terms. There\u2019s generally an explosion of people setting up their own businesses in the UK and being their own boss. I think people feel more confident and there\u2019s more of a possibility that you can work for yourself and create your own job.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Claudia Congrave specifies that <em>Mouthy Mag<\/em> is for all women: \u201cWhen we\u2019re talking about magazines for women, we\u2019re talking about all women, we\u2019re talking about women from all ethnic groups, women in all senses of the word. Non- binary people, trans women; if your feminism isn\u2019t intersectional, it\u2019s not real feminism. Claudia Congrave explains that \u201cpeople\u2019s tendency to be constantly on their phones, looking at what\u2019s happening in the world because of COVID-19, has created higher connectivity with people going to different news sources.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, there has been a<a href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/uk\/en\/pages\/technology-media-and-telecommunications\/articles\/digital-consumer-trends-lockdown-behaviour.html\"> 42% increase in social network visits<\/a> since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, and a 36% increase of news consumption on your phone. Because of this rise in use of phones and the internet, it\u2019s no surprise that there are more online magazines than ever before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jane Bentley agrees that self-publishing has increased recently entirely because of the internet. She says, \u201cWe could all be editors, we can all self-publish and there\u2019s so many fantastic tools out there,\u201d she says. \u201cIf you think about culture, zine culture was huge in the 80s. That kind of rough, literally stick stuff on paper, staple it and hand it out.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat mindset is still there, people who are creative and want to write about stuff or talk about stuff, they\u2019re still doing it. It\u2019s just because the method of delivery is more online and digital that it looks a bit slicker. I think social media and digital culture has been really successful in showing women that they can talk about things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignwide is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" title=\"What is a zine?\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LhQqg_cKRL8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><noscript><iframe title=\"What is a zine?\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LhQqg_cKRL8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Claudia Congrave adds that the pandemic also brought out anger in people, because of the governments\u2019 responses to the coronavirus, and to the protests happening all over the world for different socio-political movements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think people just kind of became more enraged,\u201d she says. &#8220;Everybody\u2019s getting really annoyed. A lot of people didn\u2019t feel represented in decisions that were being made. And people became more in touch with their freedoms. Let\u2019s channel that, let\u2019s do something more positive. Let\u2019s make some real change in these areas when we can.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Policies from the government that have come out over the lockdown period have upset many groups across the UK. Women, people of colour, and those part of the LGBT+ community have had many laws put out disadvantaging them. This includes access to health support during the coronavirus pandemic, which disfavours ethnic minorities and people from a lower socio-economic background. Indeed, research conducted because of the coronavirus shows \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2020\/apr\/20\/coronavirus-racial-inequality-uk-housing-employment-health-bame-covid-19\">how riddled Britain is with racial inequality<\/a>\u201d and that government policies only worsen its impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is why <em>Mouthy Mag<\/em> and <em>Santes Dwynwen<\/em> exist: to offer a space to explore your anger and turn it into something positive; to platform and champion more voices; to show others that you can do anything, no matter who you were born as.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>I think that\u2019s a journalist thing: if I\u2019m going to be a writer and be a part of society, I want to use it for good.
