Penarth group aims to create a beautiful community space for all

‘We want to get a lot of young people and old age groups involved’

A PENARTH community group is looking to expand its wildlife projects as it develops its community space in Victoria Square.

Friends of Victoria Square, part of Penarth Civic Society, is a community group that aims to improve the area, preserve green spaces and provide new habitats for wildlife. It meets every Saturday from 10am to midday.

Dan Brown, 41, from Cardiff, said: “We are putting compost heaps in, putting new fruit trees and planters around the square, as well as using logs from a fallen oak tree for new seating.

“We want to get a lot of youth groups and old age groups involved and find ways that we can interact with people here at the square.”

Haydn Mayo, 61, from Rosemary Place, set up the group in 2018 and there are now 100 members. “I put a flyer out and we had our first meeting in May 2018,” he said.

“The appreciation of the square has grown. It was a very important space for people during the pandemic and certainly it was more used during the summers of 2020 and 2021.”
