The council agreed to continue to fund the libraries until the end of the council term in 2017.<br \/>\nWhitchurch librarian Zoe Pearce said at Wednesday\u2019s AWEN meeting: \u201cWe must do more to show that time is of the essence. It is your library. That message needs to be stated loud \u2013\u00a0use us or lose us.\u201d<br \/>\nAWEN has grown to a 89-strong membership, after 10 new members signed up at its World Book Day event on March 3 which raised \u00a3158 to improve and maintain the library.<br \/>\nTonight former First Minister Rhodri Morgan will host a talk with writer Les James on Chartism to raise funds for AWEN. A poetry and pints night at Whitchurch Rugby Club will follow on April 20.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10371\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10371\" style=\"width: 408px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/AWEN.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10371\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-10371\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/AWEN-300x172.jpg\" alt=\"AWEN gathered for a cake sale earlier this month. \" width=\"408\" height=\"234\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10371\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-10371\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/AWEN-300x172.jpg\" alt=\"AWEN gathered for a cake sale earlier this month. \" width=\"408\" height=\"234\" \/><\/noscript><\/a> <strong>AWEN members gathered for a cake sale earlier this month.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nThe charity is also planning various fundraisers alongside the city\u2019s events to mark the centenary of Welsh writer Roald Dahl\u2019s birth in 1916.<br \/>\nAWEN\u2019s current focus is the need to buy mobile shelves, which they hope will be helped by their new charity status.<br \/>\nUltimately the group hopes to extend the existing library building into an arts centre, based on the precedent set by Llanover Hall in Canton.<br \/>\nAWEN treasurer and artist Antony Evans said: \u201cNow that we have charity status, hopefully more\u00a0funds will become available.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cBut we need specific people for specific jobs \u2013\u00a0if anyone has skills in accounting then that would be useful for a treasurer!\u201d<br \/>\nThe next AWEN meeting will take place in Whitchurch Library on 27 April at 6.30pm.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Tonight\u2019s talk on the political rights gained by Welsh Chartists will be held in Methodist Church Hall, Penlline Rd, at 7pm.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A\u00a0GROUP\u00a0supporting Whitchurch Library against the threat of closure now has charitable status, spurring on plans for a series of events.
