{"id":13988,"date":"2016-11-03T17:11:45","date_gmt":"2016-11-03T17:11:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=13988"},"modified":"2016-11-03T17:11:45","modified_gmt":"2016-11-03T17:11:45","slug":"fundraiser-jake-proves-wheelchair-no-barrier-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2016\/11\/03\/fundraiser-jake-proves-wheelchair-no-barrier-success\/","title":{"rendered":"Fundraiser Jake proves a wheelchair is no barrier to success"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A CAERPHILLY resident will be completing an 8km sponsored wheelchair roll in aid of LGBT charity Stonewall.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jake Dyche, 38, will start the wheelchair roll from Llandaff North to Cardiff Bay on November 5, as part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stonewall.org.uk\/events\/stonewall-season\">Stonewall Season Festival. <\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jake says there are many misconceptions about people who use wheelchairs but this event aims to inspire others to take part in fundraising. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cPeople often think it\u2019s a tragedy and will say things like \u2018Oh I\u2019m so sorry\u2019,\u201d said Jake.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI\u2019ve been in my wheelchair for about a year and a half and it has changed my life dramatically &#8211; I feel like I\u2019m much fitter! Mind you,\u00a0<\/span>8k may not sound like much, but it is quite an effort when you are using your arms to do it!\u201d<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jake said negative perceptions towards people in wheelchairs was \u201cdown to a lack of imagination\u201d.<\/span><br \/>\n&#8220;People don\u2019t appreciate that there are different ways of living,\u201d said Jake.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThere\u2019s this belief that you\u2019re either able-bodied and happy or in a wheelchair and unhappy.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Now I<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0want to use my wheelchair as a positive force in other people\u2019s lives, as it has been such a positive force in my life.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\nThe Stonewall Season Festival celebrates lesbian, gay, bi and trans life and culture through a range of events from November 1 to 10.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jake identifies as gender non-binary.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI\u2019m also queer, so I wanted to raise money for an LGBT charity and give something back,\u201d said Jake.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>To donate to Jake\u2019s sponsored wheelchair roll, visit\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justgiving.com\/fundraising\/JakeDyche\">www.justgiving.com\/fundraising\/JakeDyche<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A CAERPHILLY resident will be completing an 8km sponsored wheelchair roll in aid of LGBT charity Stonewall.
