Nancy Connolly investigates what&#8217;s on offer.<\/strong><br \/>\nOne good way to avoid the floods and storms is to park your brolly and book yourself in for a sumptuous afternoon tea washed down with a glass of champagne.<br \/>\nThe Park Plaza hotel in Cardiff reports a huge rise in the popularity of afternoon tea, particularly among young women. \u201cOn Fridays and Saturdays we get about 150 people,\u201d said head chef Justin Llewellyn.<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s such a good way to spend an afternoon, there\u2019s something special about it,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nAt the moment it\u2019s mostly women who \u201ctake\u201d afternoon tea at the hotel, but Justin and his team think they\u2019ve found a way to attract men into their elegant dining room.<br \/>\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" title=\"Afternoon tea\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kOcj9WSRdZU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><noscript><iframe title=\"Afternoon tea\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kOcj9WSRdZU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript><br \/>\n\u201cWe\u2019re going to start offering a male version of afternoon tea, complete with game sandwiches, whiskey and a cigar,\u201d he said. \u201cThe gentlemen\u2019s clubs in London have started doing this and we think we\u2019ve found a niche market here in Cardiff.\u201d<br \/>\nBut there\u2019ll be no place at his linen tables for the beer-swilling burly rugby supporters who frequent the capital. Oh no, the gentlemen who take tea at the Park Plaza will be discerning city types who know a good single malt when they see one.<br \/>\nThere\u2019s a nice atmosphere in the dining room, subtle piano music, discreet waiters and tables buzzing with animated chat.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1580\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1580\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMG_1663.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1580 \" alt=\"IMG_1663\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMG_1663-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1580\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1580 \" alt=\"IMG_1663\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/IMG_1663-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/noscript><\/a> Cucumber sandwich<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nThere\u2019s something immensely decadent about indulging yourself at this time of day. It\u2019s a secret, almost guilty, pleasure &#8211; like love on a cold afternoon. The tower tray of cakes and pastries has a feeling of wicked indulgence about it.<br \/>\nJustin likes to give a Welsh flavour to this most English of traditions.<br \/>\n\u201cWe like to use Welsh produce, even the butter is Welsh and we use our own Welsh cakes,\u201d he said. \u201cAlmost everything on the tray comes from Wales.\u201d<br \/>\nThe trays come filled with beautiful hand-trimmed sandwiches, warm sugarcoated scones with Welsh butter and jam, and all sorts of fancy cakes.<br \/>\n\u201cThe key word is dainty,\u201d said Justin. \u201cAfternoon tea is usually a special occasion, so we make everything very dainty and pretty.\u201d<br \/>\nDoes he cut the crusts off the sandwiches?<br \/>\n\u201cOf course! And we trim and skin the cucumber. The secret of cucumber sandwiches is to make them fresh, if you leave them too long the bread will go soggy.\u201d<br \/>\nAfternoon tea at the Park Plaza hotel in Cardiff is \u00a316.50 or \u00a322.95 with champagne.
