{"id":1648,"date":"2014-02-14T15:51:35","date_gmt":"2014-02-14T15:51:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/?p=1648"},"modified":"2014-02-14T15:51:35","modified_gmt":"2014-02-14T15:51:35","slug":"the-play-that-goes-wrong-the-new-theatre-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2014\/02\/14\/the-play-that-goes-wrong-the-new-theatre-review\/","title":{"rendered":"The Play That Goes Wrong, The New Theatre &#8211; Review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/The-Play-That-Goes-Wrong.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1653 alignright\" alt=\"The Play That Goes Wrong\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/The-Play-That-Goes-Wrong-215x300.jpg\" width=\"215\" height=\"300\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1653 alignright\" alt=\"The Play That Goes Wrong\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/The-Play-That-Goes-Wrong-215x300.jpg\" width=\"215\" height=\"300\" \/><\/noscript><\/a>Silly, over-the-top but hugely enjoyable, <em>The Play That Goes Wrong<\/em> is the latest of the \u2018<em>&#8230; Goes Wrong<\/em>\u2019 farcical trilogy from the burgeoning Mischief Theatre.<br \/>\nSet up as a play-within-a-play, the Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society have put on a 1920s murder mystery but \u2013 as the title suggests \u2013 it doesn\u2019t quite go to plan and all falls expertly apart.<br \/>\nLike an Agatha Christie staged by Basil Fawlty, it takes familiar tropes and mocks them mercilessly, sending up the genre and themselves as they go.<br \/>\nDespite the whodunnit premise, this is a show ultimately about theatre and <em>The Play That Goes Wrong<\/em> takes as much pleasure in involving its knowing audience in the proceedings as it does in gleefully tricking them.<br \/>\nThe company play with the audience\u2019s assumptions and fears, most notably during an impressively precarious scene with a second suspended stage.<br \/>\nAs well as the inherent understanding of its audience, the joy of the play lies in the actors\u2019 skill at physical comedy.<br \/>\nMake no mistake: these two hours are an endurance test, crafted by three young writers who seem to take great pleasure in putting their fellow actors in pain.<br \/>\nThere is an added enjoyment in trying to guess what, if anything, has gone wrong on a particular night; Mischief Theatre\u2019s background in improvisation makes this a tricky task as the cast fail to miss a beat.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/The-Play-That-Goes-Wrong-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1656 alignleft\" alt=\"The Play That Goes Wrong\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/The-Play-That-Goes-Wrong-2-300x199.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1656 alignleft\" alt=\"The Play That Goes Wrong\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/The-Play-That-Goes-Wrong-2-300x199.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/noscript><\/a>At times, the plot suffers from\u00a0lack of clarity as the visual spectacle and physical aspect takes centre stage.<br \/>\nAnd while the sketches are carefully crafted, on occasion they feel too familiar \u2013 perhaps one of the side effects of tackling such an overcrowded genre.<br \/>\nIts layered approach to the whodunnit also leads to fresh ideas, too.<br \/>\nA feisty and unglamorous Scot could seem like lazy stereotyping in this classically English setting; the added dimension of the second narrative \u2013 the drama troupe\u2019s handywoman jumping into the female role, competing with the overbearing leading lady \u2013 makes this portrayal work.<br \/>\nIn fact, the rivalry between the pair \u2013 and Charlie Russell and Lotti \u00a0Maddox \u2019s apparent joy in relentlessly outdoing each other &#8211; makes for one of the more entertaining elements of this cleverly observed show.<br \/>\nThe show is currently in the middle of a national tour after being hauled from 50-seater pubs to the Edinburgh Festival and beyond.<br \/>\nWith audiences lapping it up across the country, things are going very right for <em>The Play That Goes Wrong<\/em> \u2013 and as they should.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Silly, over-the-top but hugely enjoyable, The Play That Goes Wrong is the latest of the \u2018&#8230; Goes Wrong\u2019 farcical trilogy from the burgeoning Mischief Theatre.
