{"id":16717,"date":"2017-02-07T15:36:04","date_gmt":"2017-02-07T15:36:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=16717"},"modified":"2017-02-07T15:36:04","modified_gmt":"2017-02-07T15:36:04","slug":"safety-fears-school-buses-take-llandaff-shortcuts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2017\/02\/07\/safety-fears-school-buses-take-llandaff-shortcuts\/","title":{"rendered":"Safety fears as school buses take Llandaff shortcuts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SCHOOL buses taking shortcuts through Ely Road are believed to be putting children and cyclists in danger.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Residents of Ely Road in Llandaff are worried about the risk coaches are taking by driving down the road which has a five tonne weight limit.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They believe the road is too narrow for coaches and double-decker buses as there is not enough room either side of the road for people to walk safely while they are passing.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">New Adventure Travel, which transports pupils of Bishop of Llandaff High School, is one of several bus companies using the road.<\/span><br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16803\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16803\" style=\"width: 670px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-16803 size-medium-grid-size\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2017\/02\/JUNCTION-670x500.jpg\" alt=\"The junction between Ely Road and Cardiff Road by The Malsters Inn\" width=\"670\" height=\"500\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16803\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-16803 size-medium-grid-size\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2017\/02\/JUNCTION-670x500.jpg\" alt=\"The junction between Ely Road and Cardiff Road by The Malsters Inn\" width=\"670\" height=\"500\" \/><\/noscript> The junction between Ely Road and Cardiff Road by The Malsters Inn<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Resident Guy Hancock, 44, said coaches regularly mount the curb as they round the corner on to Cardiff Road by The Maltsters Inn where school children walk in the morning.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI have had to pull my five-year-old son out of the way of a passing wheel of a coach that mounted that curb,&#8221; he said.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhat really worries me is that someone is going to get seriously injured.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThere are so many schools in the area and kids walk up the road to go to school but the council hasn&#8217;t taken the issue seriously.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For the road to be re-audited by the council, evidence of ongoing danger needs to be provided South Wales Police or local councillors, a perception of danger is not enough.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Last September, Mr Hancock had a run-in with one driver as his coach turned at the junction of\u00a0Ely Road and Cardiff Road where he and his two children, aged five and seven, were standing.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAs I was on the corner I stood on the curb to prove how dangerous it was to him, that the bus could hit a child walking to school. He knew I was there and drove the bus on anyway mounting the curb and pushing me to the pavement with its side. I banged the side of the bus for him to stop and moved before the wheels hit me.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI spoke to the driver as he was on Cardiff Road stuck in traffic. He swore at me in front of my children and the children on the bus and threatened to get out of the bus and assault me. He then gave me the finger as he drove off.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\nSouth Wales Police is aware of the incident and has been working with other authorities to monitor the buses using the road.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In a letter to Mr Hancock, Aman Singh from Cardiff Council city operations said: \u201cI contacted the bus company regarding this problem and was advised that drivers would be reminded of the need to operate via Western Avenue to Cardiff Road.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\nA Cardiff City spokesperson said: &#8220;The registered route for NAT buses doesn\u2019t use the road in question, so when they have passengers, they shouldn\u2019t be using it.&#8221;<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16804\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16804\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-16804 size-small-grid-size\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2017\/02\/NAT-buses-1-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"nat-buses\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16804\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-16804 size-small-grid-size\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2017\/02\/NAT-buses-1-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"nat-buses\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/noscript> Double-decker NAT bus turning at the junction between Ely Road and Cardiff Road<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">NAT confirmed that Ely Road is not a part of the registered route of its\u00a0coaches. Managing director\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kevyn Jones said: \u201cWe don\u2019t have any regular services scheduled to operate through Ely Road. If a driver is found to operate off the scheduled route, the matter will be thoroughly investigated.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jaine Branson, 58 who lives on Ely Road said: \u201cThe buses turn left at The Maltsters because they don\u2019t want to go the other way as it takes too long. But there is not enough room for them to turn, you only need someone to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and God knows what would happen.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Several incidents including one in which a car was hit by a bus have been reported to the police and councillors of the area.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kirsty Davies-Warner, councillor for Llandaff, said: \u201cThe problem with Llandaff is that it was built for horse and cart and without destroying buildings we can\u2019t improve the road infrastructure.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe council when commissioning services should be bearing in mind which companies have been cooperative in the past and should specify any routes that they shouldn\u2019t take.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SCHOOL buses taking shortcuts through Ely Road are believed to be putting children and cyclists in danger.
