{"id":16757,"date":"2017-02-07T13:39:22","date_gmt":"2017-02-07T13:39:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=16757"},"modified":"2017-02-07T13:39:22","modified_gmt":"2017-02-07T13:39:22","slug":"meet-sikhs-feed-cardiffs-homeless-every-weekend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2017\/02\/07\/meet-sikhs-feed-cardiffs-homeless-every-weekend\/","title":{"rendered":"Meet the Sikhs who feed Cardiff\u2019s homeless every weekend"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Cs5WiC02rNI\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><noscript><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Cs5WiC02rNI\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/noscript><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">EVERY Saturday afternoon at 3pm, a group of Sikhs set up a table at the end of Newport Road where it meets Queen Street, and give out food parcels to the homeless.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Just opposite Greggs, not too far from the pedestrian crossing, they take an hour out of their weekly routine to help some of the most vulnerable people in Cardiff.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They unpack large polystyrene boxes packed with foil cartons full of lentil and chickpea curries, and pasta with sauce, as well as plastic grocery trays full of chopped fruit, crisps and biscuits, and service flasks full of piping hot tea and coffee.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The man behind this weekly display of generosity is Amerpreet Singh Khalsa, from Adamsdown, though he admits he is not the head chef for the endeavour.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cMy wife does all the cooking,\u201d he says, \u201cI just do the chopping and the simple things like pasta sauce!\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16766\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16766\" style=\"width: 494px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-16766\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2017\/02\/Sikhs1-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"The volunteers serving up food to the homeless. One of these was Vand Chakko &#8211; to share your wealth with others\u201d, says Amerpreet. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cBecause this wealth that we have, we aren&#8217;t going to take it with us.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What better thing to do than see people in need and help them out? 400\">The volunteers are not just limited to Cardiff\u2019s Sikh community either, members from the university\u2019s Catholic and Muslim societies also offer a helping hand. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Amerpreet is also joined by his newest volunteer, Premdeep Singh Gill from Reading, a Marine Geography student in Cardiff University who has been helping at the stall for two weeks.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cPeople see what we do and they just want to help in some way\u201d, says Prem, as he is known to his friends.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThere\u2019s a real desire for people in Cardiff to help out if they can, but they just need a venue to do it.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They give us clothes and food, and some try to give us money but we ask for food instead.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cA lot of people give food donations by sending a Tesco delivery van to one of our houses, and last week one woman gave us ten new coats to hand out to people.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI\u2019ve asked for donations of fruit recently, because I was concerned they weren\u2019t getting enough nutrients.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On this blustery Saturday, the stall is quite quiet at first, with only a few visitors who stop for a cup of tea.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But as four o\u2019clock approaches there is a flurry of activity, with warm foil cartons of food being handed over the tabletop, apples being pocketed for later, and shoppers stopping for a chat.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some of the visitors sit down at tables outside Greggs across the road with cups of tea, while others stop by and leave soon after.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThey do a very good thing for us,\u201d says one man shyly as he and a woman wearing table into Amerpreet\u2019s van parked outside Queen Street station and take the remaining food to the Huggard Centre.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cNone of it will go to waste,\u201d says Amerpreet.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As he carries the folded-up table to the van, Gurraj explains that they never ask too much about the lives of the people who visit their stall.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe don\u2019t ask any questions they might not want to answer,\u201d he says, \u201cbut if they are happy to talk to us, then we listen.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThere was one man who used to visit who said he wanted to become a professional chef when he got off the streets, and that he the Welsh Government has shown a spike in the numbers of people sleeping rough on the streets of Cardiff.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Though only a one-night snapshot of the wider issue, when WG undertook their <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/gov.wales\/statistics-and-research\/national-rough-sleeping-count\/?lang=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">second annual rough sleepers count<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in 2016, they found 53 people sleeping on the streets of Cardiff, a rise from 30 in 2015.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Wallich, a leading homelessness prevention charity in Wales, has recorded a similar trend, with Mia Rees, their Public Affairs and Research Manager saying: \u201cOur figures have shown a consistent rise in the number of rough sleepers in all areas, apart from Bridgend, over the last three years.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16764\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16764\"
