It\u2019s quite astonishingly bad there.\u201d Mr Melding said during the session.<br \/>\nDuring this week\u2019s event, Mr Slaughter explained the ways he would approach the issue if he was elected.<br \/>\n\u201cThe air pollution issue is a really tricky one. There\u2019s not one simple answer to it &#8211; we obviously want better sustainable public transport. One practical thing that could happen, if the Vale council works together with Cardiff Council, is cleaner buses,\u201d he said.<br \/>\n\u201cOtherwise promoting things such as park-and-rides, increased cycling and increased walking. Last December, a petition opposing a proposed wakeboarding centre at Cosmeston Country Park gained over 28,000 supporters.<br \/>\nMr Slaughter explained he would work to protect the town\u2019s green spaces and trees.<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019m on the Penarth tree forum working with the town council to devise a program to maintain the trees because we\u2019ve got some very good trees in Penarth and people do care about them,\u201d he said.<br \/>\n\u201cThere are maintenance issues, sometimes they do have to come down. The Vale at the moment has a policy that for every tree that goes down, they plant one. We fight for a policy where it\u2019s two for every one that\u2019s replaced.<br \/>\n\u201cThe green spaces&#8230;I think we\u2019re in a hard place because we can\u2019t ignore the budget problems and with the cuts it\u2019s going to get even worse. He works very, very hard. He\u2019s been here for twelve years and works for a lot of people in the local community.\u201d Mr Bartley said.<br \/>\n\u201cHe\u2019s also got a great vision for the local area and he\u2019s the kind of politician that people are crying out for, which is someone who isn\u2019t a career politician but someone who just really cares about his neighbourhood.\u201d<br \/>\nChair of the Cardiff and Vale Green Party Keith Watts, 25, was also optimistic about Mr Slaughter\u2019s campaign.<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s going really well. This is his third or fourth time running for different positions and he has been building up support. It would be phenomenal if he got elected.\u201d<br \/>\nPlaid Cymru\u2019s Penarth Branch have also announced their candidates for the local elections in May.
