We have a DJ playing and it\u2019s a disco for all ages.\u201d<br \/>\nOne of Cardiff\u2019s few jazz blues swing venues, Caf\u00e9 Jazz offers more than just live music from local musicians. The restaurant menu is varied and reasonably priced at \u00a315.95 for three courses or \u00a312.95 for two, and offers warming comfort food like beef stroganoff or a fool proof bread pudding for dessert. Its 2014 Valentine\u2019s Day menu, at \u00a319.95 a head, looks delicious with something for all tastes.<br \/>\nDrinks are also reasonable with a bottle of house wine setting you back less than a tenner, ideal to enjoy against a backdrop of soft jazz. Other wines on offer reach over \u00a330, and the bar also stocks the usual selection of beers, lagers, ciders and spirits.<br \/>\nPerhaps what is missing is a range of cocktails. Competing with many of the other bars in Cardiff\u2019s city centre is not easy, and the bar could do well to develop their jazz branding into their drinks menu too.<br \/>\nDonnie Joe Sweeney, one of the American swing artists who regular performs at Caf\u00e9 Jazz, said the recession has hit the bar hard.<br \/>\n\u201cWhen I first moved here from Seattle in 2003, on a Monday night this place was heaving. A house band drew in a lot of the crowd because it was so good.\u201d<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1752\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1752\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/donnie-joe-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1752 \" alt=\"donnie joe 2\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/donnie-joe-2-300x168.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1752\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1752 \" alt=\"donnie joe 2\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/donnie-joe-2-300x168.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/noscript><\/a> Donnie Joe Sweeney is a regular Swing performer<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n\u201cIn 2008 when the economy fell out it was really tough, especially on the musicians and the lesser paying gigs, the gigs like this. But things have just been picking up slowly and surely. Local enthusiasts and local fans will come in but they don\u2019t all come in at once. It\u2019s kind of a small community and everybody knows each other.\u201d<br \/>\nAs well as Caf\u00e9 Jazz, Mr Sweeney, 40, said Dempsey\u2019s, opposite Cardiff Castle, is the city\u2019s other main venue popular with jazz enthusiasts.<br \/>\nThroughout the evening audience numbers did pick up, but an overall total of seven proved manager Kwiatkowska right that the bar\u2019s popularity varies from night to night.<br \/>\nAs a venue, Caf\u00e9 Jazz has flair and is ideal to host small, intimate gigs with local and touring bands.
