He says Cardiff Council installed less powerful LED lights on his recommendation.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">LED lights have a longer lifespan, require less maintenance than traditional sodium lamps, are energy efficient and reduce carbon emissions. It took years before they were practical because at first they weren\u2019t bright enough and people hated the colour of the light they emitted.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe problem lies with central government,\u201d he said. \u201cThey encouraged councils to move to LEDs, but no-one asked what implications went with it.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;It\u2019s all to do with money, with businesses taking advantage of a lack of understanding of the new technology.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cCardiff Council is the only council in the UK with a sensible policy to LED lighting,\u201d he said.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u201cThey\u2019ve adopted a more cautious approach and have fitted LED lights which can be dimmed.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The American Medical Association says outdoor lighting at night, particularly street lighting, should have a colour correlated temperature of no greater than 3,000K<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The International Dark Sky Association says exposure to a\u00a0figure of 4,000K can\u00a0affect the body\u2019s pattern of sleeping and waking by decreasing melatonin.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mr\u00a0Nicholas said: \u201cMost LED lights in the UK are between 5,000 to 6,000K. Cardiff Council is the only council in the UK that has\u00a03,000K.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">An AMA report says: \u201cAlthough data is still emerging, some evidence supports a long-term increase in the risk for cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and obesity from chronic sleep disruption or shift work and associated with exposure to brighter light sources in the evening or night.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The same report says there is evidence that bright lights could disrupt nocturnal animals.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">LED lights are available in a range of colour correlated temperatures depending on how much <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">blue, green, yellow and red light they emit.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A higher CCT rating generally means greater blue content, and the whiter the light appears.
