From behind the counter in Spillers Records, she sees it all.<br \/>\nFrom hopeful new acts passing on their DIY demo tapes, to global rock acts and their international followings, Spillers has held a special place at the heart of the Welsh music scene for decades.<br \/>\n\u201cTo me, the Welsh music scene is just as vibrant as I remember it,\u201d she said. \u201cA lot of good things can happen from a DIY approach, and a lot of good things do. Self-promoting gigs, self-promoting bands \u2013 that whole DIY ethic.<br \/>\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" title=\"ashli todd   spillers\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AMAexFEdQWo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><noscript><iframe title=\"ashli todd   spillers\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AMAexFEdQWo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript><br \/>\n\u201cHowever, you can\u2019t cut things from further up the food chain because there isn\u2019t anywhere for people and bands and entities to progress to.<br \/>\n\u201cIn Cardiff we\u2019ve had a lot of setbacks I think, in terms of live music with venues that have disappeared over the last five to ten years and I really think that someone needs to ask the question of, you know, what\u2019s more important?<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/5.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1892 alignleft\" alt=\"5\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/5-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1892 alignleft\" alt=\"5\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/5-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/noscript><\/a>\u201cWe are the land of song, after all,\u201d she added. \u201cAnd I think that if you want to trade on that tag line, you really need to invest in things that help support something that\u2019s really important within Cardiff and Wales, which is creative and musical culture. It\u2019s imperative.\u201d<br \/>\nWe asked Ashli about her favourite Welsh records and managed to get her down to five. So, with a week to go before St David\u2019s Day (or Dydd Dewi Sant), why not investigate some of the records that have made the Welsh music scene what it is today.<br \/>\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" title=\"spillers top5\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/96O9xsKx7J0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><noscript><iframe title=\"spillers top5\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/96O9xsKx7J0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript><br \/>\n<strong>Meic Stevens: <em>Gwymon<\/em> \u2013 1972<\/strong><br \/>\n\u201cHe\u2019s kind of hailed as the Welsh Bob Dylan. He\u2019s legendary, he\u2019s amazing. I think most people who know Meic Stevens have a Meic Stevens story because he\u2019s got some legendary tales. I\u2019m not sure I can really tell some of the ones I know on camera.<br \/>\n\u201cIf you listen to some Meic Stevens, especially from the 70s to early 80s period, you\u2019ll be able to see the influence that his music has had on more contemporary artists, so an album by him is absolutely essential.\u201d<br \/>\n<strong>Gorky\u2019s Zygotic Mynci: <em>Bwyd Time<\/em> \u2013 1995<\/strong><br \/>\n\u201cEven at the time it was mad. They were so young when they made this album. It\u2019s one of the best constructed albums in terms of how it\u2019s pieced together. I bet there was hardly any budget for it at all.<br \/>\n\u201cThey\u2019re mad and creative as it gets. It sounds like something that people made in the 70s but it was made by teenagers in West Wales. I think in 30 of 40 years\u2019 time, people will be looking back at this album and re-issuing it and banging on about how influential it was.\u201d<br \/>\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cUftTWBh8ww?list=PL15608B3382DA919C\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><noscript><iframe width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cUftTWBh8ww?list=PL15608B3382DA919C\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript><br \/>\n<strong>Llwybr Llaethog: <em>Mega Tidy<\/em> \u2013 2006<\/strong><br \/>\n\u201cLlwybr Llaethog is Welsh for Milky Way. Again, the same with Gorky\u2019s, John Peel used to play both of these bands and give them loads of support. The classic one of hiding under the covers and writing the names in a notebook; that\u2019s where I came across bands like Llwybr Llaethog and Gorky\u2019s.<br \/>\n\u201cThey\u2019ve been going for absolute years, absolute years and the Welsh language is obviously very intrinsic to them.\u201d<br \/>\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" title=\"Pob Dim \/ Llwybr Llaethog\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5y_YumzxHio?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><noscript><iframe title=\"Pob Dim \/ Llwybr Llaethog\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5y_YumzxHio?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript><br \/>\n<strong>Cian Ciaran: <em>They are nothing without us<\/em> &#8211; 2013<\/strong><br \/>\n\u201cEveryone likes a pretty tune and everything but we definitely need artists with a voice to say stuff, and people who document what is going on with the bigger issues instead of, you know, \u2018my girlfriend left me\u2019.<br \/>\n\u201cWe should definitely celebrate people who have opinions and have voices and want to change things through the art that they make, and Cian\u2019s definitely one of those.\u201d<br \/>\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" width=\"100%\" height=\"450\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/playlists\/9386125&amp;auto_play=false&amp;hide_related=false&amp;visual=true\"><\/iframe><noscript><iframe width=\"100%\" height=\"450\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/playlists\/9386125&amp;auto_play=false&amp;hide_related=false&amp;visual=true\"><\/iframe><\/noscript><br \/>\n<strong>Islet:<em> Released by the movement<\/em> &#8211; 2013<\/strong><br \/>\n\u201cI know them all as individuals and everything they do is so sincere. I can\u2019t really ever see them signing to a major label or having major label distribution for their company because everything about them is very DIY, but without being contrived about being DIY.<br \/>\n\u201cAny release on their label is going to challenge your ears.\u201d<br \/>\nAnd the one that stands out? The absolute favourite that would always be on her desert island to remind her of Wales?<br \/>\n\u201cIt would be <em>Bwyd Time<\/em>.
