{"id":1913,"date":"2014-02-21T08:41:04","date_gmt":"2014-02-21T08:41:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/?p=1913"},"modified":"2014-02-21T08:41:04","modified_gmt":"2014-02-21T08:41:04","slug":"evita-the-new-theatre-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2014\/02\/21\/evita-the-new-theatre-review\/","title":{"rendered":"Evita, The New Theatre- review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><figure id=\"attachment_1920\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1920\" style=\"width: 681px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Evita-UK-Tour-Marti-Pellow-as-Che-and-Madalena-Alberto-as-Eva-credit-Keith-Pattison.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1920  \" alt=\"Despite a competent performance by Madalena Alberto, Evita is an unappealing protagonist\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Evita-UK-Tour-Marti-Pellow-as-Che-and-Madalena-Alberto-as-Eva-credit-Keith-Pattison-681x1024.jpg\" width=\"681\" height=\"1024\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1920\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1920  \" alt=\"Despite a competent performance by Madalena Alberto, Evita is an unappealing protagonist\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Evita-UK-Tour-Marti-Pellow-as-Che-and-Madalena-Alberto-as-Eva-credit-Keith-Pattison-681x1024.jpg\" width=\"681\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/noscript><\/a> Despite a competent performance by Madalena Alberto, Evita is unsympathetic<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nThis week\u2019s performance of Evita at the New Theatre in Cardiff is powerful but lacks emotion.<br \/>\nWhile the sets, costumes and choreography are all stunning at times, and some of the vocal performances are powerful, the production lacks the emotional clout needed to make it work as a tragedy.<br \/>\nThe audience needs to like the tragic heroine, Eva Peron, despite her faults, and this does not happen despite a competent performance by Madalena Alberto.<br \/>\nThis Evita is a cold, hard, ambitious and manipulative woman and there\u2019s little to redeem her.<br \/>\nThe character needs to have a vulnerable side for the pathos of her early death to work, something captured magnificently by Madonna in the film version of the musical.<br \/>\nThere\u2019s little to like about this Evita and Alberto\u2019s voice was shrill at times.So unattractive is this Eva that the audience identifies more with the upper class ladies of Argentine high society who shun her, rather than the heroine herself despite some staggering moments by Alberto.<br \/>\nFormer Wet Wet Wet singer Marti Pellow dishes out an impressive vocal performance as Che, his voice was particularly sweet during Dance For Eva and Che, but his portrayal of the character is somewhat cheesy.<br \/>\nYoung Welsh singer Sarah McNicholas is one of the highlights in this joint production by Bill Kenwright and Bob Tomson.<br \/>\nThe singer, from Swansea, delivered a heartfelt rendition of Another Suitcase in Another Hall and the audience was transfixed.<br \/>\nThe most impressive part of this sumptuous production is the glorious stage design and choreography during crowd scenes.<br \/>\nVocally, Mark Heenehan\u2019s Juan Peron and Alberto\u2019s Eva are impressive, and the military, caf\u00e9 and funeral scenes are breathtaking at times.<br \/>\nBut, sadly, there is something missing in this visually stunning production.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week\u2019s performance of Evita at the New Theatre in Cardiff is powerful but lacks emotion.
