Whatever championship you play, it\u2019s never perfect. You\u2019re always going to have \u201cwhat if\u201d questions.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A \u201cwhat if\u201d question that had been on every Welsh fan\u2019s mind was the strong possibility of slipping out of the top eight teams in the world rankings &#8211; and the consequences for another tough World Cup draw to boot.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But after the victory over Ireland, Wales have been spared that disgrace.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe top eight world rankings are extremely competitive. And before we went into Ireland we were staring down the barrel of potentially finishing fifth in the Six Nations,&#8221; said Warburton.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI would have been gutted with that, with the amount of hard work that has gone in from players and coaches.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe\u2019ve been in the top three teams consistently for the last four or five years now and we don\u2019t really want to slip out of that. I guess if we can finish second that\u2019s not a bad championship.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI think a lot of the teams now are on much more of a level playing field than we have been in the past few years.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhen you\u2019ve gone into the Six Nations in the past there\u2019s been maybe one or two dominant teams, but now you\u2019ve got five really competitive sides who could all beat each other and that makes the home advantage massively important.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIf we\u2019re going to win out in Paris it\u2019s probably going to have to be our best performance.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">His heroic defence against Ireland was singled out for praise by many commentators.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt\u2019s very difficult not to concede a try these days in international rugby. I didn\u2019t realise until we walked off the pitch that it was a try-less performance from a defensive point of view,&#8221; said Warburton.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI was really proud of that performance. It was a huge defensive effort and it took a lot out of the players emotionally. We put a lot of pressure on ourselves.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe want to get right back up to that place against France away in Paris.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cYou know what France are like. They\u2019re probably going to want to look to their driving game. They\u2019ve got fantastic ball carriers not just in their pack but in their back line as well.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cOne strength that really helped us at the weekend was that the ball was in play for something like 46 minutes against Ireland. Those sort of games&#8230; more often than not, when the ball\u2019s in play that long, we tend to win more matches than we lose, so we\u2019ll try and keep the ball in the park.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Warburton\u2019s reflections moved onto his decision to hand over his captaincy to Alun Wyn Jones and his improved performance as a result, <a href=\"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2017\/02\/24\/wales-prepare-expect-unexpected-scotland\/\">a topic that he had mentioned before.<\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He said: \u201cLooking at my last four performances&#8230; I\u2019m really pleased with the way they\u2019ve gone and I guess that would be a big contributing factor.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cBeing captain of Wales, you do carry a lot of weight on your shoulders. I remember when I was first captain, walking around the hotel and constantly thinking: \u201cOh my God, I\u2019m captain of Wales\u201d. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cYou do feel that all eyes are on you, that everything you do is under the microscope.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cNow I\u2019ve taken myself out of that, I guess I feel a bit more under the radar and that just takes a little bit of pressure off I think.\u201d <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When asked if he was looking further ahead from Saturday\u2019s game to the Lions tour, Warburton just laughed.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cNot one player has mentioned the Lions to each other because we have a little ongoing joke in camp here, even if it\u2019s for selections, he said.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;If I went downstairs now and asked: \u201cWhich boots are you going to wear in the game Saturday?\u201d to one of the boys and he answered, then we\u2019d all all take the mick out of him for presuming he\u2019s going to be playing.
