Parking on Nell\u2019s Point and Harbour Road used to be free over winter and business owners were concerned that they would deter people from visiting.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Winter charges start from 50p an hour with \u00a32.50 to park all day<\/span>. In\u00a0summer the rate is \u00a0\u00a31 an hour and \u00a35 for all day.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Alexander Danis, 34, was afraid the charges would put off dog walkers who visit his dog-friendly cafe, Coffee Cove on Friars Road. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">However, Mr Danis said: \u201cSince Christmas it has been brilliant. Business has been good. However, I know that from speaking to customers people drive around looking for free parking spaces.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI still think it\u2019s unfair for locals though. They pay a lot of council tax and it just means they\u2019re paying extra.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hana Court, 53, who works at\u00a0Marco\u2019s Cafe on the promenade, said: \u201cThe charges haven\u2019t made any difference to business really. I think a lot of regulars just park in the free bays if they walk their dog for an hour or longer.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cPeople have been complaining about the winter charges but no one complains about the charges in the summer. I think it\u2019s the fact that it was first time they were introduced.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lewis Crole, 23, area manager of Carousel, on Pagent Road,said: \u201cI think business has been like this before the parking charges. Obviously it\u2019s hard to tell exactly because there\u2019s a lot of competition here with other arcades, but I don\u2019t think it has affected business.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIf anything is putting people off coming here it\u2019s roadworks coming in on the island. I\u2019ve been here four or five year and I think the island is still on the up.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI don\u2019t particularly mind about the charges,\u201d said dog walker Stacey Hodgkiss, 31, from Penarth. \u201cThey need the money for the upkeep of the area.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt would put me off coming here if I had to pay every day,\u201d said Jo Davies, 55, from Barry Road. \u201cBut, I can usually find a free space.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19301\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19301\" style=\"width: 3264px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19301\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2017\/03\/File_002-1.jpeg\" alt=\"Dog walkersm Jo Davies, 55, and Sarah Hayward, 47, say they are not bothered by the charges\" width=\"3264\" height=\"2448\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19301\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19301\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2017\/03\/File_002-1.jpeg\" alt=\"Dog walkersm Jo Davies, 55, and Sarah Hayward, 47, say they are not bothered by the charges\" width=\"3264\" height=\"2448\" \/><\/noscript> Dog walkers Jo Davies, 55, and Sarah Hayward, 47, say they are not bothered by the charges<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">However, \u00a0a few business owners are still concerned that the charges have affected their income.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One shop owner, who wished to remain anonymous, said: \u201cThere\u2019s usually customers on the island all the time, but now there\u2019s lot of shops that aren\u2019t even open. I think the charges have definitely hit business on the island.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Safdor Ali, 62, owner of Romy\u2019s Cafe on Friar\u2019s Road, said: \u201cMy business has definitely been affected. If people can\u2019t find a free space to park then they just leave.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;If you compare the intake this year to last year then we\u2019ve just not earned as much.
