I want to run a place which makes a difference.\u201d<br \/>\nHe wasn\u2019t far wrong.<br \/>\nProper pubs can be some of the greatest places on earth, with the best atmosphere and the most weird and wonderful characters.<br \/>\nYet pubs are an endangered species &#8211; according to CAMRA, 26 are lost every week \u2013 and in their stead now lie a string of cheap, cheerless, soulless chain bars.<br \/>\nIf you want cheap Carling, plastic pint glasses, sticky brown tables covered in Cherry VK and the company of a rabble of half-cut 18-year-old pub golf wankers then you are spoilt for choice. If you want real pubs and a real pint, you\u2019ve got to look a bit harder.<br \/>\nHere are three Cardiff pubs which are proper local material.<br \/>\n<strong>3) The Queens Vaults<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><\/strong> Located on Westgate Street in the shadow of the Millennium Stadium, The Queens Vaults is predictably rammed on Rugby weekends.<br \/>\nBut as well as being a main match day venue, it also prides itself on being \u201cone of the last few real pubs in the city centre\u201d. Five ales run regularly, including house favourite Double Dragon by Felinfoel brewery which sells at \u00a32.30 a pint.<br \/>\nThe Vaults has Sky and BT Sports, a games area and a lounge \u2013 which lends itself to a varied clientele. On a weekday it\u2019s \u00a31.49 a pint between 10am and 12.30pm \u2013 perfect for the hair of the dog.<br \/>\n<strong>2) The Heath<\/strong><br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2092\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2092\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Pub-review_11.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2092 \" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Pub-review_11-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2092\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2092 \" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Pub-review_11-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/noscript><\/a> The Heath<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nThe Heath is almost like two pubs in one. There\u2019s a traditional area with roaring fires and a food menu with proper pub grub.<br \/>\nOn the other side is the bar area with Sky TV, a pool table and a dartboard which wouldn\u2019t be out of place at the Lakeside or the Ally Pally.<br \/>\nThe Whitchurch Road establishment has four regular ales with a guest each week. At \u00a32.84 for a pint of SA Gold it could be cheaper, but this does mean it isn\u2019t plagued with student riff-raff.<br \/>\n<strong>1) The Flora<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Flora\u2019s twitter bio is fairly blunt: \u201cIf you want a decent pint and friendly staff, go somewhere else.\u201d<br \/>\nElsewhere they describe themselves as: \u201cA traditional pub with a modern approach to life,\u201d and this is probably a fairer assessment.<br \/>\nThe Flora has a core clientele with the same faces \u2013 including the famous Cardiff City Tony \u2013 propping up the bar every time you go in.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2091\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2091\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Flora1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-2091 \" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Flora1-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2091\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2091 \" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Flora1-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/noscript><\/a> The Flora<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nWith a pint of IPA for \u00a31.99, a dartboard with recently upgraded darts, and all the football games, it\u2019s the perfect place for a session.<br \/>\nContrary to Twitter the staff are friendly, as are the locals who are happy to talk the hind legs off a donkey when you say hello to them out in the smoking area.
