VOLUNTEERS at Llandaff Cathedral revealed their \u201castonishment\u201d today at breaking its Christian Aid<\/a> Week fund-raising record.<\/span>
\nThe group revealed they collected \u00a312,554.86 between May 14 and 20, 2017, topping last year\u2019s total of \u00a310,832.<\/span>
\nBut the final count came out at \u00a316,554.86, thanks to a one-off anonymous donation of \u00a34,000.<\/span>
\nSue Smith, coordinator of the cathedral\u2019s Christian Aid Week, said the seven committee members were \u201cextremely pleased\u201d with the total.<\/span>
\n\u201cIt\u2019s astonishing. It\u2019s absolutely marvellous the way people responded,\u201d she said. \u201cI think it\u2019s a reflection of the seriousness of the Christian community at the Cathedral, and its concern with the world outside its doors.<\/span>
\n\u201cBut we couldn\u2019t have done it without the backing of the Dean and the clergy, encouraging people to give generously.\u201d<\/span>
\nThe Dean of Llandaff Cathedral, the Very Rev Gerwyn Capon, said: \u201cI am delighted with the tremendous sum raised in this year\u2019s Christian Aid Week.<\/span>
\n\u201cIt is a testament to the marvellous dedication of the volunteer team, the kind generosity of local people, and the urgency of the vital work undertaken by Christian Aid.\u201d<\/span>
\nChristian Aid Week 2017 supported refugees in Europe.<\/span>
