Our building sits on the docks of where so much of the action in the piece takes place, and it is a very fascinating story, our history is so rich. We wanted to be the No 1 venue that a post-West End show would ring before they go on the road, and we\u2019ve achieved that. Our intention now is to focus more on producing our own work.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Set during the 1900s, the musical Tiger Bay tells of a time when Cardiff was one of the most outward-looking cities in the world, had the busiest docks in the world, and was awash with international finance.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Coal Exchange witnessed the signing of the first million-pound cheque. It was also a time of revolution, with the Suffragettes campaigning to &#8220;right the wrong&#8221; on votes for women, and workers fighting for a better wage.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Love stories and lost loved-ones aside, the driving force of the show is a near turf-war between fictional &#8220;Donkey men&#8221;, native Welsh men working in the docks, and immigrants or &#8220;Bay-ites&#8221;, most of Caribbean origin.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kayed Mohamed-Mason, 27, is part of the ensemble of Bay-ites, playing a second<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0generation immigrant called Dju Dju.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt means a lot to me,\u201d Mohamed-Mason says about performing in Tiger Bay.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u201cThere\u2019s not many musicals based on a place that are then shown in that place, it\u2019s incredible. The whole culture of Tiger Bay is based so much on support and unity and people that accepted different ways of life.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI\u2019m 27 but my family has lived here, my mum was telling me, for something like nine generations. It\u2019s been great, I always remember feeling like a part of a massive community that was always willing to pitch-in and help each other out.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mohamed-Mason\u2019s character struggles to find work against the Donkey Men. \u201cThese were people who had been born here, \u2018proper\u2019 Welsh people you think they\u2019re entitled to the job,&#8221; he said.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI think at the start there\u2019s a bit of animosity. I don\u2019t even think it\u2019s mainly about race to an extent, I think it\u2019s the fact that the Donkey Men get paid so little, and then we\u2019re trying to get jobs for the little work there is. Kayed Mohamed-Mason (left) Credit: Tiger Bay Musical<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Current political and social instability in the world has also given the performance a greater focus.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u201cI think it just made us all the more aware that it is an important story to tell, and we haven\u2019t cut any corners, we haven\u2019t tried to soften it up in any way, we\u2019ve made the story very real,\u201d says producer Lyons.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cYou\u2019ll see, it is quite a difficult watch. At the end of it you\u2019ll see there is hope for the future, if you see one another\u2019s similarities without focusing the differences.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With its world premiere on November 15, it is likely a large section of the audience will be Butetown and Cardiff Bay locals, who may have lived through years of change in the area.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI definitely think we have a responsibility to tell the story as truthfully, as accurately and as fairly as you can, with as much compassion,&#8221; said Mohamed-Mason.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;There\u2019s been a lot of change to Butetown and the Docks, even since when I was younger.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThere\u2019s been so much change that it is important to remember where it came from and the people who lived there.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dotted with cultural references throughout, from characters working in Morgan Clothing Co. to solving your problems with \u201ca pint of Brain\u2019s dark\u201d, Tiger Bay celebrates the life and culture of one of the richest and most diverse periods in Welsh history.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tiger Bay the Musical opens November 13 before closing its run on November 25.
