{"id":21504,"date":"2017-11-14T13:41:56","date_gmt":"2017-11-14T13:41:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=21504"},"modified":"2017-11-14T13:41:56","modified_gmt":"2017-11-14T13:41:56","slug":"police-will-take-bikes-spot-dangerous-drivers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2017\/11\/14\/police-will-take-bikes-spot-dangerous-drivers\/","title":{"rendered":"Police get on their bikes to spot dangerous drivers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">POLICE in plain clothes will be cycling around Cardiff in the new year to monitor dangerous drivers.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Operation Close Pass will see officers riding through the city and informing colleagues about motorists believed to be a risk to cyclists.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chief Inspector Daryl Fahey said: \u201cSouth Wales Police has taken on the campaign on a pilot basis, and in the coming weeks it will be officially launched across Wales, in collaboration with Go Safe.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;Members of the public are urged to show their support and work with South Wales Police to continue improving road safety within our communities.&#8221;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A similar initiative was launched in August 2016 in the West Midlands, where there has since been a 20% decrease in the number of cyclists killed or seriously injured.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gareth Thomas, a member of South Wales Cycling, said: \u201cIt\u2019s a good idea to re-educate drivers into what they should be doing anyway, according to the Highway Code.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Caro Wild, Labour councillor and co-founder of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/cardiffcyclecity.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cardiff Cycle City<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, said: \u201cReally pleased to hear South Wales Police will be doing something about this.
