Photo: Green City Events<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n\u201cThis area has been closed off to the public for as long as I can remember,\u201d said Splott councillor and Cardiff council leader Huw Thomas.<br \/>\n\u201cHaving met with members of the community on site last week, I\u2019m really excited about how we could create a wonderful green space here for the residents of Splott and Adamsdown.<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019ve already contacted council officers to kick-start the process to open the site up to the public as soon as the Network Rail work is finished.\u201d<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One group interested in the site is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greencityevents.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Green City Events<\/a> &#8211; a community interest company also based on Railway Street.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The beginning of something VERY EXCITING&#8230;. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Splott?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Splott<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/RailwayStreet?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#RailwayStreet<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/gSEa9vVafn\">pic.twitter.com\/gSEa9vVafn<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Green Squirrel (@BeMoreSquirrel) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BeMoreSquirrel\/status\/928999110606295040?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 10, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe have been looking into this land for a long time, but because Network Rail have been here, we haven\u2019t made much progress,\u201d said Rebecca Green, director of Green City.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If the group takes on the land, it will look to the local community for ideas on what to do with it.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe will be holding a community event in the new year where people can share their ideas on what they would use the space for,\u201d said Ms Green.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI am very keen to make sure that children and young people in Splott and Tremorfa are consulted on decisions that affect them,\u201d said Splott councillor Jane Henshaw.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI would love for children in Splott to have an adventure playground, but that\u2019s just my thought. Photo: Green City Events<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A few ideas have already surfaced, Ms Green said, one of which is to turn the land into Cardiff\u2019s very first community-owned chicken coop.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A community garden is another possibility, although this would be likely to need raised beds if the site\u2019s railway location has affected soil quality.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Green City Events will also be meeting with the creators of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theboneyardcardiff.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Bone Yard<\/a> in Canton and the future <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/BridgeStudiosCardiff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bridge Studios<\/a> in Ely to see if something similar to their shipping container creative studios could work on the site.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe think a hub like this would be an amazing idea, but it\u2019s still super early days,\u201d said Ms Green.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For updates on the project, follow <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GreenCityEvents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Green City Events<\/a> on Twitter or sign up for their mailing list.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A SITE used to store construction material in Splott could be transformed into a community garden, children\u2019s playground or even a chicken coop in the next couple of years.
