{"id":22106,"date":"2017-11-21T13:11:11","date_gmt":"2017-11-21T13:11:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=22106"},"modified":"2017-11-21T13:11:11","modified_gmt":"2017-11-21T13:11:11","slug":"tiger-bay-musical-paying-tribute-citys-proud-heritage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2017\/11\/21\/tiger-bay-musical-paying-tribute-citys-proud-heritage\/","title":{"rendered":"Tiger Bay the Musical: paying tribute to city&#039;s proud heritage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>\u201cDown the docks in Tiger Bay, a revolution brews today\u201d<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nTHE latest musical to come out of Wales Millennium Centre\u2019s production company may not ignite a revolution, but certainly shows huge ambition for only their third original show, following <i>Only the Brave<\/i> and the <i>Mandela Trilogy<\/i>, both in 2016.<br \/>\nThe 44-strong cast and 15-strong orchestra of <i>Tiger Bay The Musical<\/i> began filling an expansive set with 30 songs \u2013 some musical clich\u00e9, others deeply poignant &#8211; right from the moment the lights dim on the Robert Gordon Theatre stage.<br \/>\nThe gloomy expanse of a ship\u2019s hull emerges out of a grey canvas, and does well to transport the audience back in time to Cardiff\u2019s prime: booming industry, melting-pot multiculturalism, and social strife boiling over.<br \/>\nSet in the early-1900s, we meet Themba Sibeko (Dom Hartley-Harris) newly arrived from South Africa to forget his marred past. He finds work in the docks under harbourmaster Seamus O\u2019Rourke (Noel Sullivan), who Themba suspiciously recognises from his past life. The plot is there, but constant repetition of \u201cDown the docks in Tiger Bay\u201d and the \u201cBay-ite\u201d chorus breaking out into tribal African-dances distracts the audience from following the narrative.<br \/>\nOutside the theatre doors in the red-lit fa\u00e7ade of the Millennium Centre, the cultural extravaganza of Tiger Bay does not leave your sight. Merchandise, posters and Tiger Bay Beer are everywhere. The show has initiated a celebration of a largely untold past with some fantastic stories to tell.<br \/>\nAt three hours long, Tiger Bay is a cumbersome tale of all these stories, and before it reaches its West-End goal there will be some necessary fine tuning and cuts to give it a sleekness to appeal to the mainstream of theatre-goers.<br \/>\nWith a decent refinement, this showcase of the history and the lives of Tiger Bay will fulfil WMC managing director Matthew Milsom\u2019s aim to \u201cInspire Our Nation, Impress the World\u201d, and give <i>Tiger Bay The Musical<\/i> a future in the British musical songbook.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tiger Bay: The Musical runs at the Wales Millennium Centre until November 25, 2017.
