Cycle any day between December 1 &#8211; 25 and log it with the Love to Ride profile to enter the daily draw. <\/span><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But it\u2019s too cold, then it\u2019s too hot. It\u2019s too wet. It\u2019s too dark. <\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mr Windle said: \u201cWith decent lights and some basic waterproof clothing, people can switch to riding to work in winter and discover the many joys and benefits of getting around by bike, which can make you happier, healthier and wealthier.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d<\/span><br \/>\nSouth Wales Cycling group, whose members meet up for frequent rides throughout the year, offer this advice on cycling in winter:<br \/>\n<b>Be careful of puddles<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gareth Thomas, a group ride leader, said: \u00a0\u201cI know from experience that you can\u2019t see the bottom of a puddle and then you go over your handlebars, if you pick a dodgy one.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Another cyclist, who did not want to be named, agreed: \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Be careful riding through puddles, it\u2019s difficult to see in the dark what\u2019s beneath the water. I found a huge pothole last year and flipped over the handlebars dislocating my shoulder.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWatch out for ice &#8211; many minor roads and cycle paths aren&#8217;t gritted and can be very slippery. I cracked a rib falling off my bike on the icy Taff Trail a couple of years ago!\u201d said another.<\/span><br \/>\nOther members said they preferred to use roads rather than cycle paths that are often covered with mess, including ice, wet leaves and grit.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Member Clive Taylor said: \u201dPressure needs to be applied to the local authorities or Sustrans so that cycling routes are maintained to a satisfactory and safe level. I&#8217;m fed up with riding on cycle trails that are full of potholes, tree branches, broken bottles and dog mess.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sustrans is an organisation which works with communities and policy makers to encourage safe travel. <\/span><br \/>\n<b>Get extra training<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mr Thomas encourages cyclists to receive free training from Keep Cardiff Moving, a government-funded initiative. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI did it in the summer and although I\u2019m pretty experienced, I learned loads. Most adults who sign up do so after an accident. If they\u2019d had it first they have well have been equipped to avoid collision,\u201d he said.<\/span><br \/>\n<b>Use the road confidently <\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mr Thomas said: \u201cDrivers think we belong at the side of the road. It\u2019s safer to us to ride wider, avoiding the potholes and being more visible.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ken Barker agreed: \u201cLeave plenty of space following vehicles in traffic.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cDrivers are often inattentive and don&#8217;t make allowances for cycling conditions. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Keep out of the gutter, especially when there are railings kerbside. Assume your lights will run down or malfunction and carry spares, and prepare for the worst possible weather conditions. Do this, and the likelihood of coming to any harm will be considerably reduced.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sustrans have created an online mapping tool which allows cyclists to find safe routes through the city. Good \u2018be seen\u2019 lights on the helmet and rear and a good \u2018see where you&#8217;re going\u2019 light on the front.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cGood bright colours too. If you&#8217;re cycling with a dark rucksack, cover it in something bright. My winter bag has a pull out high-vis jacket.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Members of the group warned against overly bright lights as they may dazzle others &#8211; especially head torches as they are at eye level. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Another group member added: \u201cDip don\u2019t dazzle. Like a driver on the road with their headlights.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Often lights are not enough. Wear some reflective items on your front and back.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Love to Ride have dubbed 2017 Year of the Bike, celebrating the 200th anniversary of the first verifiable bicycle.
