{"id":2280,"date":"2014-02-25T17:21:59","date_gmt":"2014-02-25T17:21:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/?p=2280"},"modified":"2014-02-25T17:21:59","modified_gmt":"2014-02-25T17:21:59","slug":"food-co-ops-can-save-cardiff-families-hundreds-of-pounds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2014\/02\/25\/food-co-ops-can-save-cardiff-families-hundreds-of-pounds\/","title":{"rendered":"Food co ops can save Cardiff families hundreds of pounds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Buying fruit and vegetables at a voluntary food co-op can save families in Cardiff up to \u00a3220 a year but fewer and fewer people are using the service.<br \/>\nVolunteers at Saint Saviour\u2019s church in Splott are calling for more and more local people to avail of beautiful bags of fresh fruit and vegetables at just \u00a33 a bag.<br \/>\nThe food co-op at the church is hoping to widen its service to include people from all over the city.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2281\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2281\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Fruit-resized.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2281\" alt=\"Glyn Perryman of St Saviours Church, Splott with Hannah James of the Rural Regeneration Unit\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Fruit-resized-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2281\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2281\" alt=\"Glyn Perryman of St Saviours Church, Splott with Hannah James of the Rural Regeneration Unit\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Fruit-resized-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/noscript><\/a> Glyn Perryman of St Saviours Church, Splott with Hannah James of the Rural Regeneration Unit<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n\u201cSome people think you have to be on benefits to take advantage of this fantastic service,\u201d said Glyn Perryman, church warden at St Saviours. \u00a0\u201c We are open to all, and we can cater for a lot more people than we are at the moment,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nIt\u2019s all part of a Welsh Government health initiative to get people in deprived areas of Wales to buy more fruit and vegetables.\u00a0 \u201cBut you don\u2019t have to be from a deprived background,\u201d said Mr Perryman.\u00a0 \u201cAnyone can come in and order beautiful fruit and veg.\u201d<br \/>\nHannah Jones from the Rural Regeneration Unit, which runs the co-ops all over the city, says the project has been very successful, but she would like to see more people using it.<br \/>\n\u201cWe do regular price comparisons with supermarkets and our fruit and veg is much cheaper for families, we sell it for what we pay for it, and it is all fresh from the market on the day,\u201d she said.<br \/>\n\u201cFresh produce can be very expensive for families, our bags are about half of what you would pay at the local supermarket,\u201d added Mr Perryman.<br \/>\nEvery Tuesday Glyn and other volunteers make about 60 bags of fruit and veg for local people who drop in for a cup of tea or coffee as they pick up their produce.<br \/>\n\u201cThere was a time when we did a hundred bags, that number seems to have fallen off in recent times,\u201d said Glyn Perryman.\u00a0 \u201cI think the novelty has worn off a bit as we have been going for over a year.\u201d<br \/>\nThere are four types of bags on offer, traditional vegetables, salad, stir fry or fruit only, \u00a0all beautifully freshly bought from Bessemer Road market.\u00a0 It is sold at cost.<br \/>\nIt is one of 25 food co-ops operating on a non-profit voluntary project all over the city.\u00a0 In Tremorfa a food co-op at the local community hall every Thursday also attracts about 60 people.<br \/>\n\u201cIt can save families an average \u00a3220 a year,\u201d said Hannah Jones.\u00a0 \u201cThat has to be attractive during these times,\u201d she said.<br \/>\nLocal schools are regular customers.\u00a0 They buy bags of fruit for the staff room and in some areas children run the co-op themselves without the help of adults.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Buying fruit and vegetables at a voluntary food co-op can save families in Cardiff up to \u00a3220 a year but fewer and fewer people are using the service.
