{"id":22985,"date":"2017-11-28T18:21:24","date_gmt":"2017-11-28T18:21:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=22985"},"modified":"2017-11-28T18:21:24","modified_gmt":"2017-11-28T18:21:24","slug":"rugby-fans-worse-football-fans-say-police","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2017\/11\/28\/rugby-fans-worse-football-fans-say-police\/","title":{"rendered":"&#039;Rugby fans worse than football fans,&#039; say police"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A SENIOR police officer has drawn attention to violence and disorder caused by Wales rugby fans following the release of figures which show football banning order numbers falling.<br \/>\nMark Cleland, British Transport Police Chief Inspector for Wales, contrasted the statistics from the most recent international rugby and football matches in a recent tweet.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Always a disappointment to review the post incident crime and see that yet again <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Rugby?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Rugby<\/a> fans were worse than <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Football?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Football<\/a> fans in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Cardiff?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Cardiff<\/a> this weekend with their post <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/WalvNZL?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#WalvNZL<\/a> drunken violent behaviour.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Supt Mark Cleland (@BTPCleland) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BTPCleland\/status\/935096968371691521?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 27, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\nWales\u2019 autumn international match against New Zealand last Saturday drew a crowd of 74,169 with 40 BTP officers covering the event at eight different locations.<br \/>\nThere were two arrests, six violent crimes and over 20 incidents of escalating disorder prevented early by police intervention.<br \/>\nIn Wales\u2019 last international football match against Panama two weeks ago, which drew an estimated 14,000 fans, there were no reported incidents of drunken or violent disorder to the BTP.<br \/>\nChief Insp Cleland said: \u201cFootball is still an issue for BTP across the country, but historically rugby creates its own problems because of the embedded drinking culture surrounding the sport. As a result, we often see poor behaviour post-match.<br \/>\n\u201cFootball is heavily legislated with banning orders etc while other sports are not.\u201d<br \/>\nThis news comes just under a week after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/statistics\/football-related-arrests-and-banning-orders-england-and-wales-season-2016-to-2017\">Home Office<\/a> released the statistics for football-related arrests and banning orders in England and Wales for the 2016 to 2017 season.<br \/>\nThe data was positive for Cardiff City who have seen an overall decrease in the number of banning orders and arrests in the 2016 to 2017 season. comparison, the Bluebirds continue to have the largest number of banning orders in Wales.<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nThis is the first time in three years under the new measurements that the Bluebirds have been below the England and Wales average for banning orders.<br \/>\nThe Bluebirds had 14 football-related arrests in the 2016\/17 season \u2013\u00a0 two fewer than the previous season. Only one of the arrests was at Cardiff City Stadium.<br \/>\nAlcohol offences were the most likely reason for a football-related arrest among Cardiff City fans.<br \/>\nElsewhere in Wales the trend continued.
