{"id":2315,"date":"2014-02-28T09:01:59","date_gmt":"2014-02-28T09:01:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/?p=2315"},"modified":"2014-02-28T09:01:59","modified_gmt":"2014-02-28T09:01:59","slug":"singing-funeral-director-saves-st-davids-day-for-the-people-of-splott","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2014\/02\/28\/singing-funeral-director-saves-st-davids-day-for-the-people-of-splott\/","title":{"rendered":"Singing funeral director saves St David&#039;s Day for the people of Splott"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The streets will be alive with the sound of music in Splott today as a singing funeral arranger has come to the rescue of a luncheon club which had no singer for a Saint David\u2019s Day party.<br \/>\nWhen news about the lack of an entertainer was reported in this newspaper the Moorland Community Centre in Splott was inundated with calls from singers from all over Cardiff offering their services.<br \/>\nCarwyn Crossman, 29, who works at James Summers &amp; Son Funeral Directors in Newport Road, Cardiff, heard about it and one of his colleagues volunteered him for the job.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2337\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2337\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Undertaker.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2337 \" alt=\"Undertaker\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Undertaker-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2337\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2337 \" alt=\"Undertaker\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Undertaker-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/noscript><\/a> Carwyn Crossman performs to the Splott luncheon ladies<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nEvery weekday around 50 pensioners attend the luncheon club where they receive a hot two course meal with tea or coffee.\u00a0 Today the club is holding its annual St David\u2019s Day celebration. Lamb cawl and Welsh cakes are on the menu.<br \/>\nBut organisers really wanted somebody to sing a few Welsh songs to entertain the lively regulars of Splott.<br \/>\n\u201cI would be delighted to sing a few Welsh songs for them,\u201d said Carwyn, who arranges funerals for people in the Cardiff area.\u00a0 \u201cI have been singing since I was four and I will have them dancing in the aisles and singing along with me.\u201d<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2347\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2347\" style=\"width: 240px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Undertaker2-copy.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2347 \" alt=\"Undertaker2 copy\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Undertaker2-copy-240x300.png\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2347\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2347 \" alt=\"Undertaker2 copy\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Undertaker2-copy-240x300.png\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" \/><\/noscript><\/a> Carwyn Crossman has saved Splott&#8217;s St Davids Day party<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nThat might be a challenge for somebody used to singing funeral hymns for customers.\u00a0 \u201cIf the singing is too shy at funerals I stand at the back and boost the chorus,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cPeople in Cardiff are afraid of singing, I am from Ceredigian and we are used to absolutely belting it out,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nCarwyn is a tenor and is used to choosing Welsh hymns for funerals as part of his working day.<br \/>\n\u201cI am not sure what I will sing yet, but I have already had a request for <i>Calon Lan<\/i> so that will definitely be in my repertoire,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nThe club is run by Dorothy Templeman from Splott, who said: \u201cWe have been snowed under with calls this week with offers from singers.
