{"id":23355,"date":"2018-01-23T13:01:20","date_gmt":"2018-01-23T13:01:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=23355"},"modified":"2018-01-23T13:01:20","modified_gmt":"2018-01-23T13:01:20","slug":"radyr-schools-raise-3500-alzheimers-society-cymru","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2018\/01\/23\/radyr-schools-raise-3500-alzheimers-society-cymru\/","title":{"rendered":"Radyr schools raise \u00a33,500 for dementia charity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">THREE Radyr schools have raised \u00a33,500 for Alzheimer&#8217;s Society Cymru.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Radyr Primary, Bryn Deri Primary and Radyr Comprehensive raised the money through collections at Christmas performances and an enterprise scheme. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Alzheimer\u2019s Society Cymru is Radyr and Morganstown Association&#8217;s charity of the year.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since July, groups and associations in Radyr and Morganstown have raised \u00a35,400. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cheryl George, community fundraiser for South Wales at Alzheimer&#8217;s Society Cymru, said: \u201cWe were delighted to be selected as the Radyr and Morganstown Association\u2019s charity of the year in 2018.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThere is a real passion within the community to help those living with dementia today as well as supporting research for the future.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With the support of Ms George and Alzheimer\u2019s Society Cymru, a new fundraising group has been formed. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ms George said: \u201cThis will help maximise the fundraising potential this year and act as a legacy beyond being the chosen charity this year.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt\u2019s fantastic to see the whole community come together, uniting against dementia.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The group is busy organising events including a traditional Beetle Drive in February and a music event in March. The bulk of the fundraising will take in May at Radyr and Morganstown\u2019s annual festival, two weeks of events including concerts, fairs and a parade. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Claire Davies, headteacher of Bryn Deri Primary School, said: \u201cAt school, all the donations from parents at our Christmas performances went and the children were involved in the singing at the Christmas tree lighting event this year. Photo: David Cargill<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Radyr Comprehensive organised an enterprise week in which they sold chocolate and other small gifts.\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mr Silver said: \u201cThe aim of the association is to make life better for people living and working in the area but also to raise money for charity. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;Over the whole year we all try and fundraise for the charity. Last year we supported St John\u2019s Ambulance and we raised about \u00a312,000.
