Two bird boxes were also blown down after the clean up, and will be replaced at the group\u2019s next event.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI&#8217;m really passionate about the maintenance of these incredible spaces,\u201d said Josh Lewis.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mr Lewis is a Cardiff University student who helps out with the project. He is also a member of Arts Whitchurch Eglwys Newydd (AWEN), a <a href=\"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2017\/10\/19\/whitchurch-library-aims-become-home-arts\/\">group<\/a> campaigning to keep the nearby Whitchurch Library open.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Volunteers are keen to get everyone in the local community involved with the project.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI think the gardens provide an excellent opportunity for the education of young people, particularly in the history of Whitchurch,\u201d said Mr Lewis.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The church gardens have a lengthy history:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><b>12th century &#8211; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Church settlements are established on the site.<\/span><b><br \/>\n<\/b><b>15th century<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; A chapel is built.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>17th century<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; St Mary\u2019s Church is built, incorporating the chapel.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>1904<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; St Mary\u2019s Church is demolished after a new parish church is built on Church Road, Whitchurch.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>1972 &#8211; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cardiff Council take over responsibility for the neglected churchyard in the hope of turning it into a garden.<\/span><b><br \/>\n<\/b><b>1974 &#8211; <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">St Mary\u2019s Gardens officially opens, thanks to a \u00a314,500 council grant from a scheme known as Operation Eyesore. In the same year it wins an award at the Wales in Bloom competition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At the time of opening, the church gardens had a park keeper, who had his own mess room and shed. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">However, more than 30 years later the gardens have become overgrown and neglected, prompting these volunteers to take action.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The next working party will be on February 20, where the group want to plant bulbs and wild flowers in their continuing effort to spruce up the gardens.<\/span><br \/>\n<b>\u201c<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I&#8217;m excited to see where this project will go,\u201d said Mr Lewis.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Those who wish to volunteer at future community events can contact Zoe Pearce on saintmarysgardens@gmail.com.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AFTER the success of their first event, local volunteers got together again to help clean up St Mary\u2019s Gardens.
