{"id":24068,"date":"2018-01-30T17:15:03","date_gmt":"2018-01-30T17:15:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=24068"},"modified":"2018-01-30T17:15:03","modified_gmt":"2018-01-30T17:15:03","slug":"film-aims-show-wi-jam-jumble-sales","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2018\/01\/30\/film-aims-show-wi-jam-jumble-sales\/","title":{"rendered":"Film aims to show WI is about &quot;more than jam and jumble sales&quot;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A FILM which aims to show that Women&#8217;s Institutes are &#8220;more than jam and jumble sales&#8221; has been made by members of a Cardiff branch.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Members of Birchgrove W.I. have produced a short film called Cake! that aims to emphasise the group&#8217;s work with social inclusion, diversity and community rather than just stereotypes about baking.<\/span><br \/>\nCate Hopkins, who directed and wrote the script for the project, said: \u201cWe wanted to show that the WI people do more than make jam and have jumble sales.<br \/>\n&#8220;Though I\u2019m not going to lie, there are a lot of jumble sales, baking and walking clubs.\u201d<br \/>\nThe Birchgrove group worked on the film with Iris Outreach, a community branch of the Iris Prize Festival which\u00a0celebrates LGBT films. Credit: Iris Prize Outreach<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With help from Iris, who have the skills and knowledge of film industry experts, the group wrote, directed and shot their film. The project is currently in the post production stage and will be debuted at Birchgrove WI\u2019s own film festival. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe film tagline is: It\u2019s time for tea and the ladies of Birchgrove WI are baking a cake\u2026 The basic concept is that diversity makes the group stronger, that we\u2019re all different but when we work together we can achieve great things,&#8221; said Miss Hopkins.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;There\u2019s also a theme surrounding allies, which comes in at the end. It\u2019s a mixture of a sketch and some personal accounts. I\u2019m not sure when it will be ready but we\u2019re meeting next week to plan our premiere which will probably be in Birchgrove in the Spring.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mark Williams, Iris Prize Outreach Facilitator, said:\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;We were delighted when Birchgrove WI invited us to a meeting to discuss the project. \u00a0We then worked with a small group to discuss concepts and help to develop one of these into their film.<\/span><br \/>\n\u201cWe had a great day filming with them and bringing the concept, based on Cate\u2019s script and direction, to life.<br \/>\n&#8220;Despite a long and hectic day, the group worked hard and stuck with us to the end.
