{"id":24371,"date":"2018-02-02T15:08:40","date_gmt":"2018-02-02T15:08:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=24371"},"modified":"2018-02-02T15:08:40","modified_gmt":"2018-02-02T15:08:40","slug":"customers-fund-brewers-open-new-city-centre-pub","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2018\/02\/02\/customers-fund-brewers-open-new-city-centre-pub\/","title":{"rendered":"Customers fund brewers to open new city centre pub"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TWO men who started making beer in their garden shed are set to open their own Cardiff pub and brewery thanks to donations from their customers.<br \/>\nRhys Watkins, 36, and Adam Edinborough, 35, opened Crafty Devil\u2019s Cellar on Llandaff Road in 2015 but had ambitions to expand and open an independent pub in the city centre.<br \/>\nThe pair asked fans of their beers to fund the \u00a315,000 project with donations and now, after almost doubling their target, they are set to open Beelzebubs on High Street next month.<br \/>\nRhys said: \u201cWe are the first brewery apart from Brains to be in the city centre, which has always been our aim. We are very proud of this. But it\u2019s not a craft beer pub, it\u2019s our pub, it\u2019s Cardiff\u2019s pub.<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s about moving away from niche; it\u2019s about drinking great beer in a great pub. It\u2019s for everyone.\u201d<br \/>\nRhys and Adam want to follow the American blueprint, embedding a town\u2019s brewery into the community, and have teamed up with Chris Rowlands, who runs the City Arms in the city centre.<br \/>\nThe Cardiff focus is extremely important to the brewers. Normally you need around \u00a3200,000.\u201d<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nThe pair, who are both from Canton, met at the age of six and went to school together. Their brewing story started\u00a0in 2014 on St David\u2019s Day when they went on a tour of Otley Brewery in Pontypridd.<br \/>\nRhys said: \u201cWe looked at the process there and saw what they were doing.<br \/>\n\u201cAdam worked out that this was a process he could understand and that evening we had our first ever discussion about brewing craft beer.\u201d<br \/>\nUsing YouTube videos and online research Rhys and Adam started brewing out of a garden shed in Loftus Street, Canton.<br \/>\nRhys said: \u201cWe started at farmers\u2019 markets four years ago and we couldn\u2019t have got where we are now without help from the community.<br \/>\n\u201cWe have been doing as many events as we can in the city to promote the Cardiff angle.\u201d<br \/>\nTheir crowdfunding page on the Indiegogo website was set up with a \u00a315,000 target and got 453 backers (which Rhys believes are almost all from the Cardiff area) who raised \u00a328,410.<br \/>\nRhys said: \u201cIt\u2019s a testament to our loyal followers and how they always back us in everything we do. It\u2019s heart-warming to see that we are building this up from the ground.\u201d<br \/>\nThe whole community feel is reflected throughout the businesses and they are committed to paying the real Living Wage.<br \/>\nRhys said: \u201cWe are proud of our team. Our workforce is our most important asset. We want people who are passionate about our beer.\u201d<br \/>\nTalking about their plans for the future Rhys said: \u201cThe hope is to replicate the Crafty Devil Cellar model in another suburb of the city.
