This week, the Splott-based<i>\u00a0<\/i>actress heads north to voice her part in a BBC Radio Wales drama by writer Si\u00f4n Eirian. She\u2019ll play a daughter whose father suffers from a rare form of dementia. \u201cSi\u00f4n\u2019s written a really gorgeous, moving piece. Every time I\u2019ve read it so far, I\u2019ve cried, so I don\u2019t know how I\u2019m going to keep it together for the recording!\u201d she says.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Caryl grew up in Swansea but moved to Cardiff at 18 to study at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Graduating with a BA (Hons) Acting degree in 2005, she decided to stay.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cBut the thing with acting is, you go where the work is,\u201d she says. \u201cFor a couple of years, even though my base was in Cardiff I didn\u2019t work here at all. I was all over the country.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In 2007, she got a part in long-running Welsh soap <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/p001pp0l\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pobol y Cwm<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Image: Theatr Bara Caws<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nAfter marrying actor and musician Alex Parry and having her son in 2010, time at home became even more precious \u2013 and it\u2019s in Splott caf\u00e9 The Imperial that we sit on a Sunday afternoon for a chat about Caryl\u2019s latest achievement: winning Best Actress in the Welsh Language at the 2018 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.walestheatreawards.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wales Theatre Awards<\/a>.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The annual awards, organised by arts critics across Wales, celebrated a record-breaking year this year, with almost 600 artists, companies and shows nominated.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Caryl\u2019s performance in political drama <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/theatrbaracaws.com\/portfolio\/yfory\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yfory <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">earned her the accolade. The Theatr Bara Caws play followed fictional Plaid Cymru leader Gwyn Davies as he tried to negotiate a new direction for the country, while being blackmailed by an old friend to keep things as they were. Image: Theatr Bara Caws<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Is there a big audience for Welsh-language theatre, then?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt depends where you go,\u201d Caryl explains. \u201cIt was a tour of Wales, and obviously the team chose their venues carefully, and know where there\u2019s an audience already there.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cYou can\u2019t really compare it to English theatre, because it is a minority language, but there is a good strong Welsh audience out there, and they support Welsh theatre. They\u2019re very loyal.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Growing up in a bilingual household, Caryl attended a Welsh-language school in Swansea. \u201cIt\u2019s funny, because it\u2019s such a minority language I think you get more passionate about it as you get older,\u201d she says.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIn school, it\u2019s cool to break the rules and speak English \u2013 but as you get older, you realise how important it is to keep it going, and how lovely it is.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIf you meet someone who speaks Welsh, it\u2019s sad to say but it feels like a luxury to speak Welsh to them, and you just want to speak it with them as much as possible, because it doesn\u2019t happen that often.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Caryl\u2019s done some English-language theatre as part of her work as an associate actor at Theatr Clwyd in Mold \u2013 which is where she met husband Alex. Image: Wikimedia Commons<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nBut after this week\u2019s radio project, she\u2019s returning to Cardiff to film the third series of S4C\u2019s Welsh-language political drama <i>Byw Celwydd.<\/i><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The drama, subtitled in English, first aired in 2016, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-3377346\/Is-Welsh-TV-make-Killing-Political-drama-stuffed-sex-subterfuge-subtitles-set-hit-screens-new-year.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">made national headlines<\/a> for its comparison with US hit series The Killing. From completing her first 10k last year with the<a href=\"https:\/\/en-gb.facebook.com\/GirlsTogetherSplott\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> local ladies&#8217; running group<\/a> to plotting with other parents in the playground about getting a wine bar opened up in Splott, Caryl has thrown herself into life in the south Cardiff district.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI feel very passionate about Splott.
