She heard similar noises almost weekly between October and December, usually before 5am.<br \/>\n\u201cMy father was seriously ill in hospital during this time and I was travelling to Swansea to see him. Coupled with no sleep it was immensely stressful,\u201d she told <em>The Cardiffian.<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Exhausted again &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/networkrail?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@networkrail<\/a> piledriving between 2 and 4am in Splott right by my house. Woke up thinking a bomb had gone off. 8 weeks of this and counting. No end in sight. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/uTxyuHuYk4\">pic.twitter.com\/uTxyuHuYk4<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Nicki (@cardiffbites) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cardiffbites\/status\/943509488539185152?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 20, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\nOne father of two, who lives near Splott Road bridge and preferred not to be named, told <em>The Cardiffian <\/em>he had been woken four or five times between 2.30am and 4am on work nights.<br \/>\n\u201cThese noises and vibrations are literally strong enough to shake my house,\u201d he said.<br \/>\nHe said the noise can last up to two hours.<br \/>\n\u201cIt makes it impossible to sleep and wakes my wife who works long days and my two young children who have school the following day,\u201d he complained.<br \/>\n\u201cIt&#8217;s as loud as an outdoor festival.\u201d<br \/>\nA Network Rail spokesperson said the work was part of its Railway Upgrade Plan, which should eventually make things quieter for residents as diesel trains are replaced with electric ones.<br \/>\n\u201cThe noise is caused by piling work, which is essential to the modernisation programme. For the safety of our track workers, it is carried out overnight when trains are not running,\u201d they said.<br \/>\n\u201cPiling can be a noisy process and we apologise to neighbours disturbed by this activity and thank them for bearing with us during this essential upgrade work.\u201d<br \/>\nThe noises in Ms Nieuwenhuis\u2019s video were caused by a hydraulic hammer, they added \u2013 something only used \u201cwhen absolutely necessary.\u201d<br \/>\nMore information on Network Rail\u2019s ongoing piling work can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.networkrail.co.uk\/running-the-railway\/our-routes\/wales\/south-wales-electrification\/walespiling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<br \/>\nThe Railway Upgrade Plan has also seen Splott Road bridge <a href=\"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2018\/01\/23\/splott-road-bridge-work-continues-despite-carillion-collapse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">closed to traffic for three weeks<\/a> while workers finish raising the bridge to accommodate new electrified lines.
